The One Where the Visa Ran Out but the Love Didn’t You’ll never guess how I spent New Year’s Eve 2017 in London.🙋‍♂️ The city was loud with lights, everyone was out partying… and we were on the couch with pizza, talking for hours, and when the clock struck twelve, we watched the fireworks outside and felt sparks flying inside too😜. It all started on a dating app in 2017. Sushank had just moved to London from there in September for his second Master’s… We started speaking in November. and our chats just clicked. But two weeks later, tragedy struck and he had to rush back home. We stayed in touch and I made sure he had someone to talk to. When he returned to London, that’s when we decided to meet on New Year’s Eve. Soon, we were inseparable… exploring London Bridge, Big Ben, and all the touristy spots that somehow felt new with him around. On Valentine’s Day, he surprised me with a helicopter ride over London and arranged dinner where a musician played my favorite song. A few months later, I took him home to meet my family and they all adored him. The next couple of years were filled with everyday joys, travelling, meeting families, and planning our future. In July 2019, we went on a trip to New York. This time, he showed me around the city he grew up in just the way I’d shown him around London. And then, a few days later, on a private yacht, he surprised me with a ring. Trust me, at that moment, all I could do was scream ‘YES!’ before he could even finish asking. Then came the hard part, when his student visa was to expire in March 2020, and he had to move back to New York. The long distance of 4.5 years wasn’t easy, but we made it through planning our dream wedding through video calls. After a long wait and many postponements, we had a small civil ceremony in Aug 2021 and we finally celebrated our big fat Indian wedding in June 2022. It was a week-long affair with six events and every moment was filled with laughter and love with family and friends.
