“I first read David’s play over a decade ago and it seared itself into my brain. I’ve wanted to direct it ever since and - thanks to the vision of Wessex Grove - I feel so lucky to be working on this revival alongside David, Nick, Tony and the incomparable Rebecca Lucy Taylor, who brings the whole thing alive as Maggie. Like me, she responded to this fifty-year-old play as if it were written yesterday and there couldn’t be a better time for it to come roaring back into the West End. An extraordinary picture of a world, and a band, tearing itself apart at the seams - shot through with some really great songs - its spirit of rock n roll revolution/desperate howl of defiance feels just as pertinent now as it did in 1975.” - Daniel Raggett @raggett.daniel
Anna X (2021) dir. Daniel Raggett
New York is famously a city where anyone can become someone else—and no one does so with more audacity than Anna, a young Ukrainian woman who rebrands herself as a wealthy art heiress from a powerful Russian family. Armed with designer clothes, high-society charm, and curated mystique, she crosses paths with Ariel, an affable tech entrepreneur whose elite dating app only accepts the top six percent of applicants. Their whirlwind romance—sparked at a drug-fueled club night—spirals into a dance of deception, as Anna’s façade begins to crack.
Daniel Raggett directs with astonishing visual flair, transforming the stage through retina-scorching projections, live video, and an ‘80s-inspired electro-pop score. The result is a charged, cinematic experience—more fever dream than traditional theatre. Emma Corrin emanates cool vagueness and calculated charisma as Anna, while Nabhaan Rizwan lends warmth and sincerity to Ariel, even as his own role in the performance of status is subtly critiqued. The production’s design—by Mikaela Liakata and Tal Yarden—shifts with the characters' illusions, making identity feel spatial, immersive, and volatile.
Charlton’s script, loosely inspired by the real-life Anna Sorokin case, questions the line between ambition and fraud in a society driven by branding, access, and appearances. It provocatively suggests that Anna’s scams mirror Ariel’s pitch decks—both chasing status through storytelling. Yet beneath its slick surface lies a sense of cultural erasure: Anna’s backstory is blurred, and the class and cultural tensions between her and Ariel are left largely unexplored.
Premiered at the Vault Festival before arriving at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre as part of Sonia Friedman's Re:Emerge season, Anna X was celebrated for its style and energy. Though it softens the sharper edges of the real-life scandal it echoes, the play succeeds as a gripping, high-concept reflection on identity, illusion, and the performance of power in the digital age.
