✨Wittering Wednesday ✨ 2026 marks 110 years of RAF Wittering, and as part of our anniversary year we’re continuing Wittering Wednesday - sharing stories from our past, what we do today, and life on Station. In 2016, a new memorial honouring the fallen of Royal Air Force Wittering and Wittering village was formally dedicated at All Saints Church. The then Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Hillier joined station personnel, parish councillors, and residents for the service, which marked the start of the station’s centenary commemorations. Crafted entirely from stone, the memorial stands in tribute to those from the station and village who made the ultimate sacrifice since the First World War.

As part of recent exercise activity, 71 Inspection & Repair Squadron utilised additive manufacturing processes, to deliver a critical component in a simulated scenario. Using a handheld scanner, the components geometry was captured in minutes, before digitally transferring data to the additive manufacturing facility. In less than 24 hours an aerospace grade polymer and titanium alloy part was produced and ready to be installed. The use of existing and emerging additive manufacturing technology means that technicians could scan, manufacture and deliver critical components across the globe. ✈️💻🔧 #rafwittering #supportforce #technology

✨ Wittering Wednesday ✨ 2026 marks 110 years of RAF Wittering, and to celebrate we're launching Wittering Wednesday - sharing stories from our past, what we do today, and life on Station: In 1969, RAF Wittering welcomed the Harrier – a revolutionary aircraft capable of vertical and short take off operations. No. 1 (fighter) Squadron was the first squadron to operate a Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capability in the world.  For decades, Harrier squadrons based at Wittering formed a vital part of NATO’s front-line force, able to deliver low level strike and close air support even without conventional runways. The distinctive sight and sound of the Harrier became synonymous with the Station, a legacy still proudly reflected today by the Harrier that stands as RAF Wittering’s Gate Guardian.

April saw the Month of the Military Child. This highlights the challenges that military children face with frequent location changes and separation from parents for varying lengths of time It is also an opportunity to recognise the strength, resilience and adaptability of children in military families 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 2MT took part in a RAFA Kidz stay and play event in which a white fleet unit 🚐 was taken to the nursery, giving children a fun, hands-on experience whilst creating an environment for them to understand the role their families play at RAF Wittering. Opportunities like these help military children feel valued, included, and celebrated 🎉 — exactly what this month is all about ✨

✨Wittering Wednesday✨ 2026 marks 110 years of RAF Wittering, and to celebrate we’re launching Wittering Wednesday - sharing stories from our past, what we do today, and life on Station: Group Captain Sir Basil Embry played a pivotal role in shaping RAF Wittering during the early years of the Second World War. As Station Commander, he recognised Wittering’s strategic importance and led major developments that defined its future. Most notably, he oversaw the integration of RAF Wittering and RAF Collyweston, creating longer runways capable of operating larger, heavily laden aircraft. Alongside infrastructure improvements, Embry prioritised operational readiness, discipline and morale, establishing Wittering as a key training and operational base. His leadership left a lasting legacy and reflected his later distinction as one of the RAF’s most successful wartime commanders.

Wittering Wednesday 2026 marks 110 years of RAF Wittering, and to celebrate we're launching Wittering Wednesday - sharing stories from our past, what we do today, and life on Station: In August 1955, RAF Wittering was presented with its station badge by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Displaying the motto “Strength is Freedom”, the badge reflects our heritage and operational role. The chained lion represents units being released on operations, while its three tails symbolise the Commands and Wings Wittering has served. Today, it remains a proud symbol of the Station’s strength and contribution to the RAF.
