I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended today. I’ve been having a moment to reflect, and I’m so glad we took the plunge and started this group.
Seeing those smiles today really brought it home how much this is needed.
We have some children who have been home educated from the very start, but also many who have been let down by the school system and are now home educating because they simply can’t cope in that environment. We also have a wide range of ages. Our youngest member has been 7, and our oldest 17.
What stood out most today is this: children of all ages, even teens, still thrive through play and creativity.
A huge thank you to Kelly and Isobel from the RAF Learning Team for such a wonderful workshop. The activity today highlighted this beautifully, and it was fantastic to see.
What breaks my heart is that so many of these children were misunderstood in school, and as a result, shut down and stopped engaging.
I’m incredibly proud of our aviators and the little community we’ve created. In just six weeks, we’ve seen confidence growing, friendships forming (for both children and adults), and learning beginning to flow naturally again.
I truly believe confidence and happiness have to come first.
An unhappy, overwhelmed child is like a plant sealed inside a greenhouse with the vents shut.
The air is heavy, the light is dim, and everything feels suffocating.
Even with the right care and nutrients, it doesn’t really grow. It can’t. Its energy goes into coping with the environment, not reaching upward.
A happy, secure child is like that same plant placed in an open garden.
There’s light, space, fresh air. Nothing is forcing it to grow, but it does anyway. It leans toward the sun, stretches, explores.
You don’t have to make it grow. You just create the conditions, and growth follows naturally.
Thank you all again for coming today. I’m so excited to see where this goes, and I’m so glad that aviation has given our children a shared space to connect 💙✈️

These fantastic models made from recycled materials have been created by KS2 students on one of our recent outreach sessions as part of our new 'Space Debris' workshop. 🤖
This workshop is now available as a free outreach session for KS2 classes in Birmingham, Walsall and Stoke-on-Trent by members of the RAF Museum Midlands Learning and Engagement team. 🔭
The workshop will include a presentation introducing students to the topic of space debris through colourful animations and video clips of real RAF personnel describing their role in defending space. Two hands-on activities will also be delivered alongside the presentation, one experiment into space debris and launch windows conducted with marbles and one design project where students will create a space clean-up device using recycled materials. 🛰️
A limited number of dates are currently available, to apply for a place please complete the form in our bio or on the RAF Museum Midlands website under 'Learning Events' or email [email protected] with any questions☄️
5 sessions in and what started as just an aviation social group has started to turn into something truly amazing! Ollie wouldn’t step foot in a classroom 18 months ago, and now he’s helping to run this class with me and has even stood up and done presentations off his own back in front of a class of 30!! We’re totally winging it (no pun intended ✈️) but we have so much fun and the fact that we have familiar faces returning each week means we must be doing something right! 🤞Ollie has met some really good friends and we even have two girls on board now which is amazing!!! So excited to see where this goes! Thank you to @rafmlearning for giving us this opportunity, seeing their smiley faces each weeks just makes it all worthwhile! ✈️ #homeeducationaviators #homeeduk #homeeducation #learning #rafmidlandsmuseum

Open to anybody not currently in education, employment, or training from Walsall and surrounding areas, if you're interested in a creative career, this is for you!
Spend a day exploring the museum, uncovering more information from the exhibits and taking photographs and sketches. Then work together to produce a children’s colouring and storybook inspired by RAF stories, beginning with the mascot “Twinkletoes” the cat. This will be distributed to children across Walsall and visitors to the musem. You'll manage artistic creation, digital production, printing and distribution.
