Um…well…I’ll work on that part.

It takes a lot of people to make art and many of them don’t get the recognition they deserve. So every Thursday I am shining a light on fellow creatives that I have worked with (or would like to)!
Today I am spotlighting Stacey Hummell, a makeup artist that values taking care of your personal, emotional safety just as much as fixing your face. Whether she’s getting you glammed up for a red carpet premiere or creating a black eye to help sell a beating, Stacey puts significant thought into how to make you look (and feel) your best. She has a wealth of knowledge to make sure she’s using the right products at the right time, and the skill to make it look effortless. You can also be guaranteed that she will keep you laughing during your time in the chair.
I asked Stacey a few questions and here is what she had to say:
JOB TITLE: Makeup Artist/Business Owner
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
I’ve come to really cherish moments spent working with individuals experiencing makeup transformations for the first time. Watching them shift into, “damn, I look good!” through a few small enhancements, is for sure my favorite part!
WHAT DO YOU WISH ACTORS (OR OTHER CREATIVES) UNDERSTOOD ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
* Know the name of your moisturizer/sunscreen as product bases can interact (water, oil, silicone, etc.).
* Actors: Please avoid eyelash extensions; I’ll add them if needed for your role.
* Makeup goes on in layers, not all of them pretty. Trust the Process.
* Share important details about your face/hair when you sit down, such as if your face “eats” makeup, or any specific products that cause breakouts. You know your face better than I do.
* ADs: Treat us like the Camera or Lighting Dept. Constantly asking to take the actor before the time we’ve had allotted disrupts our flow and can negatively affect an actor’s self confidence.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: It is an inherently intimate thing to touch another person’s face and/or to have yours touched. The makeup trailer is meant to be a safe space. If anyone is making it uncomfortable in any way, speak up loud and clear. You matter and I believe you.

When you watch a movie or tv show, see a print ad, enjoy a concert, mute a commercial, workout with a person on video, you are seeing maybe 5% of the “work” done. Hundreds of craftspeople and supporting industries (janitorial, financial, food services, etc) did what it took to make the final product incredible.
