Last month marked nine years of my weaving practice. I'm deeply grateful for every single piece I've made; everything I've learned over these past nine years; and all of the people who offered generosity, knowledge, and support. Weaving is something that was unequivocally mine as I grew into my mom identity. It kept me growing and known to myself during times when I thought new motherhood might erase me. It has been a foundation in my darkest times, for grieving, coming to terms with hard news, and, most importantly, for healing. Over the last six years I've become friendlier with grief, which I now know is a close neighbor to profound joy. Weaving has been my companion through it all. I love that my kids see me doing my life's work, and that this is what we're reaching for: finding the thing that makes us feel the most like ourselves.
I hope I get to be an old lady for a lot of reasons. One of those reasons, is that I can't wait to see what I'm making 40 years from now.

Meet Laura Wasserman, a fiber artist, narrative weaver, and one of our 2026 Emerging Artists!
Laura’s weavings feature rich color fields, built from found and recycled materials and her own handspun yarns. Each piece captures an emotional landscape: loss, motherhood, disability, family history, the female experience.
“Every weaving tells a story, marking a moment in time.”
What makes Wasserman’s fiber arts process distinct is that nothing is decided in advance. As an improvisational weaver, every composition, color, and fiber choice happens while the work is in progress with intuition as an art making methodology.
Formally trained in creative writing and largely self-taught in weaving, Laura brings a storyteller’s instincts to the loom. Her work has been shown at ACCI Gallery in Berkeley, Mann Library at Cornell, and Faultline Gallery in Oakland.

Mother's Day weekend celebrations. My kids are amazing people. And the more I lean into the chaos of this life and accept it, the more beautiful it all becomes. We're also still celebrating our anniversary and took a gondola ride on Lake Merritt, which I never did in the 16 years I lived there. And this morning we visited the Grand Gallery, saw the Weight of Air exhibit by @wired_sculpture_studios , and now I'm the proud owner of a piece of their art. ⚡
