Last week, the playwright of Garbo’s Cuban Lover, Odalys Nanin, visited Copenhagen from Los Angeles. Down the Rabbit Hole had the pleasure of an interview with Nanin, run by
@joana.fpo , and a Q&A after the performance on Friday, 13th of March.
In both events, the playwright gave insight on her inspiration for the play and more details about the amazing Mercedes de Acosta.
This play brings de Acosta into the spotlight after a life of being overlooked due to her openness about her queer identity and her support of women’s rights. De Acosta is the real hero, “her story, her voice needs to be heard, not just because she was Garbo’s lover […] And so I get very happy when other people want to produce it, because it’s kind of like, wow, they really like it. You know, it’s the effort that you put in, especially in this play, because I’ve done it so many different ways, so many different times”. According to Nanin, it is important to recognize that Mercedes de Acosta is more than her affairs with some of the most famous actresses of her time, and this play invites the audience to understand that.
In truth, this is the first time that Garbo’s Cuban Lover has been produced outside of LA, and it was the debut of the Abridged Version, which kept the same essence of the original. The playwright’s inspiration came primarily from Mercedes de Acosta’s biography Here Lies the Heart and the letters between her and her lovers, that had been released by the Rosenbach Museum (Philadelphia, USA), which were studied by Odalys Nanin and made her want to “bring this story to life”. In the playwright’s words, “good writing is true writing. And so what I do to make it true is that I connect things that I’ve experienced into the play”, which gives a whole other dimension of emotion to the play.
Garbo’s Cuban Lover addresses the struggles of living in a homophobic, sexist society, and the dreams of a time where people are free to love whomever.
The play will be running at H2O CPH until the 28th of March (link in bio).
