Lost in all the beauty and sacrifice 📍Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection. Inaugurated in 1889 for the opening of the Bourse de Commerce, this monumental artwork was commissioned by the architect Henri Blonde! by Alexis-Joseph Mazerolle. The four parts reflect the imperial power balance of the time: Russia and North America each have their own space, while Western Europe stands alongside the Ottoman Empire. Africa and Asia, targets of conquest, are grouped together. The European commercial boom due to the acceleration of colonial projects is illustrated: symbols of the Industrial Revolution are alongside scenes of exchanges of goods between natives and white merchants. We see the imaginary typical of the late 19th century, made up of wonder at a wide and multi-faceted world, and a thirst for “the other” Colonial iconography representing black bodies according to racist stereotypes, between physical power and animality just as Asian women as welcoming and sophisticated. Native Americans depicted as exhausted, give way to conquerors cowboys. In the clouds, the prophetic figure of the explorer Christopher Columbus appears. @boursedecommerce
