Costa Rica was the first place in Central America to have same-sex marriage, LGBTQ rights are enshrined in their government, healthcare is affordable, and there’s an easy way to get there and move there almost immediately at a lot of different price points. My 14 year-old baby Roger has died. I’m wrecked. He died in my arms. Even when he became the oldest animal in the household, he still was my baby and I realize I have far more photos of the other animals because Roger is usually on top of me someplace in my lap on my chest in my arms. He drowned and was resuscitated earlier this year so every extra moment with him was a miracle. That doesn’t mean I’m not in agony today though.

This is Mrs. DeBord, my high school journalism and English teacher, the woman who helped save my life, helped create my career, taught me what a leadership look like, and fostered my love of all things print. Even in the chaos of high school she was my place of safety. I was so sad to find out today that she passed away like I do all things from a friend of a friend from back home in Payette, Idaho. I’m lucky I got to talk with her not too long ago and I always followed her Instagram where she posted witty little notes like the one below. That is my oldest friend, Jeff, who was my first boyfriend when we were 13 or 14 (because I didn’t realize he was gay at the time; didn’t realize I was queer either). But to have somebody in your life who you have known since 1982 and who now lives near you is such a wonderfully surreal blessing. Through the years jeff and I will go through gaps where we didn’t talk at all, but then when we did six months later, we picked up just like we were 14 years old again. Having somebody who’s known you since you were 13 is a humbling experience because they know your shit and they know you before you or anything so they’re always willing to take you down a peg if you need it or lift you up on a pedestal if you need that more. And our kiddo, Jennye, really likes him too. (Jacob had to work that day!)
