I'm no doubt idealizing the past. But it seems our political system thrived when both parties shared a fundamental morality, borne of basic notions of right and wrong, but differed in their strategies to realize these common values. But what separates the parties today is far more stark; we must shed the polite euphemism "political differences" and name them for what they are: moral differences. And what do we do when one party openly - even flagrantly - embraces racism, misogyny, autocracy, homophobia, xenophobia and the idolatry of a deranged ideologue? Your discomfort with Uncle Pete no longer has to do with your "political differences;" you place stock in something as fundamental as human decency, and he does not. It's become that simple and that terrifying.
