This marks the end of my tenure taking over the QML Instagram! Thank you all for indulging me! Thanks to Paige, Jesse and the queer materials lab team at the Tyler school of art fabrics and materials department for having me as a resident! Canât wait to get back into the studio once things open up :) you can find me @chantalthethief and in person somewhere probably walking around the woodlands cemetery or stalking a movie theater hoping to catch a flick soon. Much love!
Starting off 2020 with an amazing experience as part of the performance intensive. This selection is an excerpt of a larger piece that came out of the collaboration.
Beginning of my recent lecture on my practice, this being a video essay I made last spring about my identity as it developed over the years and continues to. Look out for the rest throughout the week!
Hey Instagram! This is @chantalthethief taking over the @queermaterialslab account for the week! Iâm honored to have the chance to do my first ig takeover (still learning the lingo, how did I do?) and to have a chance to share some of my work, insights and curiosities over the next several days! Weâre gonna structure things by sharing segments of a lovely guest lecture I got to partake in as a queer materials lab resident for one of Tylerâs classes a few weeks ago. Keep a lookout for them and eager to learn about what all of you think/feel in response!
We will be postponing all Queer Materials residencies and events until Fall 2020. We want to thank Keenan Bennett for spending the Spring semester with us. Keenan Bennett (he/they) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Philadelphia and known for their work that has been shown in multiple exhibits across the country! Check out Keenan on Instagram to stay up to date with his art practice.
At the Queer Materials Lab we provide a studio space and an-ever evolving collection of materials through which queer, transgender, gender non-conforming and non-binary identifying people may examine and engage with the idea that materials can be 'queer' either through their location, their history, their tactile qualities, or their makers. At the Lab we collect materials as well as provide space for creators to archive their work for student research. Stop by our space in the lobby and meet our artists in residence!
Say âhelloâ to Kat Richards, one of two current artists in residence! Kat Richards is a Philadelphia, PA based artist that works in printmaking, drawing, and fibers. Stop by and visit them in the Queer Materials Lab Monday through Thursday and donât forget to give Kat some love on Instagram!
