“Form Exaggerations” 2023 42cm x 59.4cm Lino Print on Paper An outcome from the Bollywood’s Magic Masala project, Form Exaggeration is a collection of poster art showcasing a different intrepetation of Bollywood posters through filled-colour illustrations inspired by dramatic formations of movie characters from these masala films. In filmmaker Manmohan Desai’s masala films, exaggeration is a key driving force in enabling actors to depict a certain dramatisation of feeling, provoking high intensity of emotions for audiences to experience as they enjoy these movies.

Choice of medium–lino printing–is inspired by India’s blockprinting technique, as well as to bring out commercial poster characteristics of layering and collaging in conveying a film’s narrative.

“The Masala Publications” 2023 PP Neue Montreal Recypal 80gsm 11.2 x 21 cm / 40pp Digital Printing / Thread-Sewn The masala genre–a hybrid genre that blends comedy, melodrama, romance, action and musical–grew in popularity in the 1970s due to its ability to evoke high-strung emotions in under one film. In a time where hand-painting was the medium of choice, masala posters were treated as a dramatic piece of visual language due to an artist’s ability to tell a story on canvas to mirror the range of emotions in its narrative. However, with the emergence of technology, the preference for digital methods has led to a possible death of India’s visual culture. As such, this project aims to revive and appreciate India’s lost art of hand-painting through its ability to exhibit masala narratives using emotional storytelling, in hopes of sparking conversations on its continuing relevance as an advertising medium for Bollywood films. The Masala Publications is a 3-piece publication series that acts as an information booklet about the Bollywood’s Magic Masala project, with each corresponding to the three key masala films of filmmaker Manmohan Desai–Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Coolie (1983) and Suhaag (1979). In addition to background context of India’s commercial art and the key masala narratives, each book showcases the film’s emotional data that inspired the outcomes of this project.

Creative Process Journal “Final Year CPJ” 2023 PP Neue Montreal Recypal Matt White 80gsm, Painted with Add-Ons 16.7 x 23 cm / 202pp Digital Printing / Ring-Bind Creative Process Journal is a self ring-binded publication that acts as a form of documentation of the creative journey of my final year project, which consists of research findings, experimentations and its primary outcomes, lecturer notes and anecdotes of various whacky incidents that took place in the LASALLE studio of D301. A personal favourite outcome of mine from my final year project due how spontaneous it turned out. Looking at it, I like to think of it as a personal homage to the six years of “eh shit cpj how” throughout my poly and uni years <3

Lino Craft Making “Spoo!” 2022 For an Image-Making workshop held in school, we were given the opportunity to create our own designs to carve on a linocut board. Once done, we proceeded to learn lino printing and experimenting with different colours and techniques! As the premise of the workshop surrounds ‘bottles’, I illustrated a cat trapped in a bottle saying the word “Oops!” (although once printed, I realised I did it backwards) as inspired by an incident that actually happened to my own dear cat.

“Do judge a book by its cover.” 2020 Brief: Penguin Modern Classics are redesigning some of their book covers and have commissioned me to produce photographic material that will be used in their two new book cover designs. The assignment is to use product photography for the other.  The book that I picked is titled ‘Perfume: The Story of a Murderer’ where it tells the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, an unloved orphan in 18th-century France who is born with an exceptional sense of smell, capable of distinguishing a vast range of scents in the world around him. He ends up murdering several women to capture ther unique scents.  Perfume is the main pinnacle point of this story. In the story, the main character who was gifted with an inhumanely strong sense of smell, grew attached to a scent of a young woman because of how pure and feminine she was. Hence, I wanted to play with the concept of scent and femininity by using symbolism. The feminine scent of a woman is deemed to be powerful due to its nature of enticing men that walks by. What’s more feminine than flowers? Art Direction, Styling & Photography by me Lighting Assistant: @_kimchii , @niktanmishra Model: @atiqahnadzirah_00
