This rare acoustic session captures a foundational moment in Senegalese music.
Filmed backstage at Glastonbury for the BBC, we see Cheikh Lô and Youssou N’Dour stripped back to the roots, performing “Guiss Guiss.”
For Cheikh Lô, this isn’t just a performance. It’s a spiritual record. As a devout Baye Fall, “Guiss Guiss” is a praise song dedicated to his personal guide, Mame Massamba N’Diaye. It captures the very essence of the Baye Fall philosophy: humility, hard work, and an internal peace that outweighs “all the gold in the world.”
Chapter 01: Cheikh Lô.

“When I sing about my spiritual guide, I feel good... I feel much more internal peace, which is really important. Yes, it’s more important than all the gold in the world.”
Mamadou Moustapha Lô, better known as, Cheikh Lô, is a master and cornerstone of the Sahelian sound. Born in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, to Senegalese parents, his foundation was built on the rhythmic discipline of the Orchestra Volta Jazz before he ever stepped onto a global stage.
He is a polyglot of the soul… singing in Wolof, Bambara, and Dioula to bridge the gap between tradition and the future. As a devout Baye Fall, his iconic Njaxas (patchwork) attire is a spiritual archive of humility and community. He remains a silent giant, proving that internal peace is the ultimate architectural feat.

MONUMENT: MBAYE DIEYE FAYE
Artstalgie is simply l’art et la nostalgie.
When people talk about Mbaye Dieye Faye they usually mention the showman. But I really wanted to celebrate the technician and the weight of his lineage.
Translating his energy meant treating the screen like real physical paper, pushing as much friction into these coarse strokes as I could. Building a monument with these rough, heavy lines is a challenge, but a clean, polished drawing just would not capture the raw power of the Sabar.
A tribute to a maestro whose rhythm is built into his heartbeat.
Swipe to see the original footage that inspired the piece.
“Même si je n’ai pas de percussions devant moi, mon cœur bat toujours le rythme. Je sens le rythme dans moi-même.”

Grateful beyond words for everyone who came through, showed love, and supported me as I stepped into something new. The warmth, encouragement, and community around the @jellabiya Iftar and Show meant more to me than I can express. Thank you to everyone who made that moment feel safe, supported, and full of light. Very appreciative of @kategaye & @_manafaye_ for the opportunity to work with you two to make this possible.
As Ramadan begins, I pray we are all granted the blessing to reach its end and to meet our best selves along the way. I ask forgiveness from anyone I may have wronged, knowingly or unknowingly, and I pray for health, peace, and clarity for us all. Wishing everyone a beautiful and meaningful Ramadan. In Sha Allah I’ll see you on the other side. 🤲🏿🤍
🎶 Just a house, a kettle of tea… and the heartbeat of a nation.
In 1989, Super Étoile rehearsed Old Tucson in the middle of a quiet Dakar neighborhood.
No stage, no crowd. just pure soul.
Mbaye Dieye Faye, Youssou Ndour, Assane Thiam, Ouzin Ndiaye, and Papa Oumar Ngom building something timeless.
Even the neighbors couldn’t help but peek through the windows.
✨ Senegal’s rhythm, before the spotlight.

No stage. No script. Just brilliance in broad daylight.
In this rare moment from the early ’90s, members of Super Étoile de Dakar casually blend jazz with Senegalese rhythm, like it’s second nature.
Thierno Koite. Assane Thiam. Mbaye Dieye Faye. Youssou Ndour.
A jam, a hangout… and history in motion.

Introducing @artstalgie
TIMELESS FACES (ICONS): Chapter 1: @youssoundour1959
Youssou N’Dour is often called “the golden voice of Africa.” His vocal range, emotional resonance, and ability to deliver both griot storytelling and contemporary power made him a household name far beyond Dakar.
He is a griot of the modern age, keeping Wolof traditions alive while reshaping them through mbalax — a sound he helped pioneer by fusing sabar rhythms with global influences like jazz, soul, and Cuban music.
“He sang in Wolof, but the world understood.” 🗣️
From collaborations with Peter Gabriel and Neneh Cherry to his performance during Nelson Mandela’s release concert, N’Dour has long been a global voice for African dignity and pan-African pride.
