Imagine if land wasn’t something to own, but something we belong to. Community Land Trusts (CLTs) such as @elserenocommunitylandtrust are helping us rebuild that connection—protecting land for communities instead of profit. Colonialism and capitalism have fractured our relationship with the Earth, fueling gentrification that displaces families - a persistent problem in our neighborhoods.
In cities like Los Angeles, CLTs are key to creating permanently affordable homes, preventing the displacement of vulnerable communities.
Curious for more? Check out the full episode of our podcast to dive deeper into how CLTs are changing the housing landscape!

Zapatista Communique: The Common and Non-Property (December 2023)
"On some past occasion, a few years ago, the Zapatista people explained to themselves the struggle 'as the women that we are' pointing out, not a matter of mere will, disposition or study, but the material basis that made this change possible: economic independence of Zapatista women. And they were not referring to having a job and salary or the alms in coins with which governments across the political spectrum buy votes and memberships. They pointed to collective work as the fertile ground for this change. That is, organized work that was not intended for individual well-being, but for that of the group. It was not just about getting together for crafts, commerce, raising livestock, or planting and harvesting corn, coffee, and vegetables. Also, and, perhaps, above all, it was about their own spaces, without men. Imagine what in those times and places they spoke and speak among themselves: their pain, their anger, their ideas, their proposals, their dreams..."

Asymmetric Spatialities: Territorial Coloniality is a laboratory that studies coloniality and decoloniality trans-versally through the power relations present in territorial trans-formation. We understand coloniality as the socio-environmental “power asymmetries” present in the domination of authority, knowledge, and ways of being imposed by capitalist-patriarchy. We aim to critically examine spatial practices or sets of socio-environmental transformation technologies. Through conversations with invited guests, readings, drawings, cartographies, and case studies, we will meet both synchronously and asynchronously in a non-hierarchical setting to study together how spatial practices (re)produce various forms of discrimination, inequity, and exclusion. Throughout these sessions we will ask ourselves: How is de/coloniality spatialized and territorialized?
Invited guests: Ishaq Albalbary, Marquis Bey, Linda Quiquivix @qqvx
It’s an honor to be part of the No-State Solution special issue of @thefunambulistmagazine , joining the conversation with Sophia Azeb and a humbling ensemble of artists and writers pushing the conversation and imagination in the direction we need.
My contribution, “A Maya Critique of Global Capital and the Nation-State”, builds on the Zapatistas’ theorizations of the Fourth World War and their metaphor of capitalism as a hydra, asking that we not assume the state is the starting point for politics, that we learn how to live without capital, and that we start building shelter now so we may see the day after this storm…

A Maya Compass.
Accompanying the maps throughout @palestine1492 is a compass inspired by Maya ceremonial altars.
It is nicely appreciated on the book cover for its colors where red is east, black is west, yellow is south, white is north.
Also present is the all-important green-blue at the center to represent the earth-sky, and the implication that between earth-sky there is you.
Seven cardinal directions rather than four reminds us we are not above the land, not owners of the land, never separate from the land.

Grateful to share what I hope can be medicine in these heartbreaking times.
Palestine 1492 is a report back I began working on after the March of Return in 2018 that shares my research, analysis, diary entries, stories, and personal journey accompanying the Palestinian struggle for life.
It is a journey through history, geography, and political theory disguised as memoir.
It's now available for ordering from your local independent bookstore at a good discount, and available at those other places, too.
The publisher is happy to share a PDF for anyone who can benefit 🙏🏽
