Had no idea? Yea neither did we. Thankfully @qabeeleh did a deep dive into the sample and the fascinating origins of Orkes Gambus, a genre that started with Yemeni immigrants who travelled to Indonesia in the 19th century, bringing much of their culture and sound with them. An absolute honour chatting to the special @badershashit for @rollingstonemena about his latest EP “Clash”, WhatsApp collaborations, building a studio in the hood, and his brother @khalilshashit . Some excerpts here, full article link in bio. Last slide and EP cover photo credits to @greg_verbeke , and a special thanks to @dannyghajjar for constantly platforming real stories.

in the early 2010s, @amershomali and team created a portrait of Leila Khaled titled “The Icon”, made entirely out of lipstick the Leila Khaled portrait was broken into 50 * 70 pixels and 16 colors, 3500 lipsticks were then custom made based on the color map and the 16 colors used were chemically modified to bear temperature the portrait was intended to portray how icons and symbols of resistance from the 70s & 80s have been adopted by modern commercialism, from a distance, it’s the famous 1969 poster of Leila Khaled holding her AK, but from up close, it’s nothing but a product (in this case lipstick), showing how revolutionary symbols can be turned into trojan horses for profit

On Palestinian Prisoners Day, I want to take a quick moment to highlight some of the work of Nidal Abu Aker. Nidal is a journalist and resident of Dheisheh refugee camp in Beit Lahem who has spent more than 15 years in administrative detention in Israeli prisons through multiple arrests by the occupation. On Sawt Al-Wihda (voice of unity), the only radio station to be broadcast directly from the camp. He hosted a program called “In their cells”, which addressed issues relating to Palestinian political prisoners, and passed messages from Palestinian political prisoners to their families. All photos here are by Nidal documenting life in Dheisheh, and are now part of the Nidal Abu Aker collection and sub collections in The Palestinian Museum Digital Archive. slide 1 - a masked man during a PFLP led march slide 2 - newly released prisoners being welcomed home slide 3 - from a PFLP march slide 4 - a woman writing on the walls in the camp slide 5 - from a PFLP march slide 6 - reception held by the people of the camp upon the return of the shaheed Mohammad Abu Aker, Nidal’s brother slides 7, 8, & 9 - from a PFLP march slide 10 - from a eulogy for the shaheed Mohammed Abu Aker in the camp slides 11 & 12 - the reception of Mohammed Abu Aker following a treatment trip to the USA slide 13 - from a PFLP march slide 14 - kids in the camp slide 15 - the shaheed Jad Atallah using a slingshot during the second intifada slide 16 - the reception of Mohammed Abu Aker following treatment in Al Quds slide 17 - men in the camp helping move a refrigerator slide 18 - a man raising the Palestinian flag over a pylon in the camp

Can’t think of a better excuse than Iraq qualifying for the World Cup today to revisit Diana Al-Shammari’s Iraq jersey from a couple of years ago. Diana has been turning kits to grails for years now with beautiful embroidery work, and the 2024 Iraq Asian Cup jersey was no exception, if you aren’t familiar with her work, go peep some more of the threads @thefootballgal with the quickness
