Gauri Lankesh’s Urgent Saaru live performance by Pushpamala N 5:00 pm IST 18th April 2021 On Zoom Hosted by @reliablecopy Link to join the webinar: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85417818473 *Please note, the above link will only be activated an hour before the performance. Pushpamala, elaborately costumed, will do a live cooking performance as an act of remembrance for the artist’s close friend Gauri who was assassinated in 2017 for her political views. Gauri was the artist’s neighbour and a good cook who gave the artist several recipes. Urgent Saaru - which means a quick curry that is dished up for unexpected guests - was probably invented by Gauri’s mother. The performance takes off from popular TV food programmes, while also referring to the Hindu prasada and the Christian Eucharist, where red wine and bread representing the blood and flesh of Christ are given in remembrance of his sacrifice. This particular recipe was specifically chosen for the performance as the tomato coconut curry is deep red in colour, the colour of blood, and because the times are…urgent. This is an updated version of the performance previously performed at the Hyderabad Literary Festival in 2018. Based on The 1Shanthiroad Cookbook, Meals Ready is a series of three cooking-related events in which contributors from the book demonstrate a selection of recipes. Meals Ready serves as the next part of a broader project undertaken with support from an arts research grant from India Foundation for the Arts, to initiate dialogues around the politics, history, and culture of food with a broader audience.
