“Since the beginning of time African people have uniquely sculpted style. This film is an archival portal celebrating, examining and amplifying joy, flair and creative expression throughout the African diaspora. Candy Paint is a collage of the people, sounds and moments that represent and influence the zeitgeist. The montage is a conversation around Black sources of delight across the spectrum of our pasts and how that is interwoven with consumption and late stage capitalism.”

JOONAM (2023) Directed/Edited by Sierra Urich
I recently discovered this patient film exploring a woman’s quest to learn her grandmothers language, the stories of the women who came before her, and in turn herself. Joonam is a gorgeous, honest self portrait , a collage with fantastic elements of verite, historical family images , and deep conversations. It defies structures and its seams whisper wisdom of things unsaid yet felt. I enjoyed this so much.
