🏆 SPJ National President Chris R. Vaccaro and Vice President Nicole DeCriscio presented the inaugural Fred Brown SPJ Ethics in Journalism Award Monday at SPJ headquarters in Indianapolis to student journalists from Indiana University’s @idsnews and Purdue University’s @purdueexponent . Despite their schools being longtime rivals, The Exponent and the Daily Student joined forces to protect press freedom, as their universities’ leaders withdrew support and imposed operational obstacles. The Exponent  publicly supported Indiana University journalists, even assisting in distributing a special print edition to ensure coverage continued.  SPJ leaders recognized the students for what they call a clear example of ethical journalism in action — courage, accountability and a commitment to serving the public. The award honors those who uphold the SPJ Code of Ethics, which centers journalism’s highest obligation: serving the public. 📰⚖️The presentation marked the start of #SPJEthicsWeek.

Monday, the Society of Professional Journalists awarded The Exponent for leading the fight for student journalism with the "Fred Brown SPJ Ethics in Journalism Award," recognizing our plight with the administration at Purdue and our stand in support of our rivals at the Indiana Daily Student. Support award winning independent student journalism by donating to the 501(c)(3) educational organization on our own "Day of Giving" this Wednesday. 🎨: Sawyer Rebennack
