This week, I talked with Arlene Vivar-Beairsto, founder of Crystal Moon Public Relations and lead organizer of Punk Island, about the real work behind DIY music PR, all-ages booking, punk festival organizing, representation in punk, and the community labor that keeps underground scenes moving.
In this clip, Arlene talks about one of the hardest truths of PR: there are no guarantees. A publicist can do the work, build the relationships, send the pitches, and get the release in front of the right people, but that does not mean every outlet will cover it. What matters is quality over quantity, realistic expectations, and building long-term relationships that can help bands grow beyond one release.
We also get into Punk Island, all-ages shows, mixed-genre bills, Latino and queer visibility in DIY spaces, and why bands need to be organized before they start promoting a release.
