Most Shopify stores are losing margin on Buy Now, Pay Later without even realising it.
If you’re using Afterpay or Zip Pay etc. Shopify actually adds a third-party transaction fee on top of the BNPL merchant fee you’re already getting charged, which directly cuts into your margin.
Here’s the fix:
Use PayPal Pay in 4 via PayPal Express Checkout where Shopify waives the additional fee, meaning you keep more of your margin on every BNPL order.
That’s money back in your pocket and more budget for marketing, ads, and other growth generating activities.
If you’re serious about improving your store’s profit, don’t just switch blindly. A/B test your payment options with the aim to influence your users to checkout their order via the gateway that puts more margin back in your pocket.
You might even find that Afterpay converts better and justifies the additional fees, but you won’t know until you test it. This is something we always like to test, and it varies dramatically from store to store.

Should your Add to Cart button be green?
Not necessarily...
A lot of people assume green means “go” (like a traffic light), so it must be the best choice. Red means stop, grey means cancel which is an easy logic, right?
But design doesn’t work like that.
Think about when you’re driving a car at night. Your eyes naturally get drawn to the headlights of oncoming cars passing by, even though you should be focused on the road ahead. That attraction to the light happens because of contrast.
It’s the same on a website.
Take a look at the black t-shirt I’m wearing with a bold white logo. The logo stands out because of the higher contrast.
Add to Cart buttons work the same way. If your site background is dark, a lighter button will stand out more. If your site is light, then a darker button will stand out more.
It’s not about the colour of a button, it’s about making sure the button has the right contrast to guide the visitor’s eye.
