Sometimes the best mechanisms are the ones that you don't even think about. The humble Carabiner has moved on from being a critical piece of mountaineering equipment to something that allows us to easily connect things. It works so well it is easy to not really think about HOW it works.
At a glance you can see a small piece of steel in the hinge area and you might think that it uses a type of leaf spring or torsion spring. However, that small tab of metal helps jog the force from a very stiff compression spring off axis of the pivot to create a reliable simple return force. Pretty Clever!
