Very grateful to be able to do what I love each and everyday and honored to be recognized with people I respect and admire. Thanks for the love @billboard and congrats to my coworkers for their recognition as well.
Look Mom, I’m on TV! Se me olvidó subir esto pero hoy salí en #elgordoylaflaca hablando de los 100 años de @celiacruz en @applemusic y un poco más. Gracias @clarissamolina por la visita y el tiempo. 🕺🏽🎵
Back in the mid-2000s, when the Super Bowl halftime performers were usually catalog rock artists like The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Tom Petty, I worked at a radio station in LA that would throw “Big Game Parties” at nightclubs. They were basically watch parties for the station’s fans, but at halftime, we’d turn off the TVs and bring out a Latin act to perform live for the fans.
We had Calle 13, Voltio, Pitbull, De La Ghetto, and others over the years. It was an amazing time. We had our own little reggaetón concerts at halftime. Never in a million years did I imagine that one day we’d see a reggaetón show at the actual Super Bowl, but here we are. Isn’t life crazy?
Pictured is De La Ghetto at The Conga Room shortly after he released Masacre Musical, and the audio is the promo we ran for our show with Pitbull probably in 2008.
Tonight, Bad Bunny will make history at the Benito Bowl. I’m so ready!
When Trevor Noah was reciting DtMF’s translated lyrics to Bunny as a gag to get him to say them in Spanish since he couldn’t perform, I noticed that the crowd was not getting the joke. That led me to believe that most of the people in that audience, many of whom are members of the Academy, are not even familiar with one of the top songs from his nominated album.
How could it possibly win Album of the Year?
At that moment, I seriously started to doubt his chances of winning.
Then, considering that he missed out on Song of the Year and Record of the Year, it started to feel like there was no way he’d win Album of the Year.
When the nominees were announced and I saw the crowd’s reaction to them, I thought it could be Kendrick, or Clipse, or shit at that point, anyone but Benito.
My heart started racing, and then I thought to myself, Harry Styles is there because Bunny lost to him in 2023. He’s gonna hand him the GRAMMY for Album of the Year this time, and it’s gonna be epic! THIS is his moment, and then… it happened.
Wow! What an incredible feeling! Bad Bunny takes home the GRAMMY for Album of the Year. Not Latin GRAMMY, GRAMMY! The one with the black base.
Two hours after the show, and my heart is still beating a little faster. We watched a historical moment tonight.
In the 68 years that the GRAMMY Awards have been around, no one has ever won Album of the Year with a Spanish language album. No one. Not Gloria, not Ricky, not Shakira, not Chente, not even Celia!
Bad Bunny did it tonight, and next week, he’ll make history again when he performs at the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show.
What a time!
PS sorry for the long ass caption. S/O to you for making it all the way down here.
