Cina GEO will be getting a lot of new members to the family soonish. We now have italics, Mono, and a display version coming up. DM if you need more info, etc. We are deep into designing a new publictype.us with a lot of updates and changes in June.
Almost every week, @michaelcina (visual) collaborates with @sv4 (text + selection) for @herbsundays to produce a cover image for curated playlists featuring selected people. These covers are almost exclusively @publictype fonts.
Here’s a quick run through covers #157–167. If you use our fonts, email us some examples, we would love to feature your work. We will continue to post more of these.

Plakate is a condensed type family built around a systematic approach to weight distribution. The lightest weight shares the same stroke thickness as the accents in the boldest, allowing for seamless mixing and matching within a structured framework. This internal logic extends to its Stylistic Sets, particularly Set 01, where alternate vowel forms become a defining feature of the typeface. Designed as a functional tool, Plakate is built for versatility, with over 620 glyphs providing flexibility across a range of applications. Whether used for tight compositions or expressive typographic arrangements, it delivers both precision and play. A reliable asset for any designer needing a super-condensed sans with extra layers of depth.

Cina GEO embodies the balance between clarity and character, a geometric sans refined for modern identity systems, editorial design, and digital environments. It is built not only to function perfectly, but to feel right across contexts. Cina GEO balances the precision of geometry while also keeping a sense of warmth and momentum.
Originally drawn in 2014 with idealized geometric proportions, the family evolved through years of critique and testing to reach its current form. The thin weight set the foundation, defining proportion and rhythm, while the black weight pushed contrast to its limits. Revisited and refined during the pandemic, it benefited from expert feedback that sharpened its tone and improved usability across scales and media.
Cina GEO is both rational and intuitive. It is neutral enough to support complex design systems yet full of small decisions that give it life. The result is a versatile typographic system that feels precise but never sterile, timeless yet unmistakably contemporary. Built to endure, Cina GEO stands as a dependable tool for designers who value clarity, restraint, and lasting form.

Yamantaka was originally designed in 2015 for a documentary exploring cultural perspectives on death. The first iteration rejected rigid typographic structures, embracing irregularity and organic forms. In a landscape dominated by pristine, precision-driven fonts, Yamantaka stands apart—its distinct character balancing contemporary refinement with historical resonance. As the design evolved, the need for a broader character set led to extensive experimentation, expanding the letterforms and reshaping the type’s overall texture. This introduced a sense of grandeur and weight, making even concise text feel more substantial and memorable. The result is a typeface with a quiet confidence.

Cina Sans is the result of over thirty years of typographic exploration, shaped by a balance of critique and admiration for the Neo-Grotesque genre. While it doesn’t adhere strictly to historical models, its foundation is informed by a long engagement with Helvetica—revisited through reinterpretations in 2002, 2009, and 2019, and discussed in publications like Emigre. The origins of Cina Sans trace back to 2023 when a custom type inquiry sparked the idea of creating the “ideal sans.” This vision was refined through extensive testing, thoughtful application, and critical feedback, leading to multiple iterations and adjustments across its nine weights. Collaboration with a Google typeface developer ensured technical precision, making the typeface adaptable across both print and digital environments. With 1,460 characters per weight and a range of stylistic sets that dramatically shift its tone (there are many ways to use this font), Cina Sans is designed for both familiarity and flexibility—offering designers a tool that is at once classic, functional, and full of potential.

K.73r typeface family by @kimabooks
Still in love with it.

______
K.73r is a geometric sans typeface born from a synthesis of basic shapes—square, circle, triangle—crafted with a meticulous set of rules. Like a musical canon, each letter is an imaginative arrangement of these geometric blocks, creating unexpected shapes through experimentation. This font, a brainchild of Lauren Graycar's two-and-a-half-year journey, offers upper and lowercase letters, lining and old-style figures, basic punctuation, math symbols, currency, diacritics, and ligatures. With five distinct styles and a nod to early Modernist typography, K.73r builds on historical types with a vast type table of 10,500+ glyphs, providing up to 100 alternates per character. Its rigid geometry is softened by Lauren's hand, inviting the warmth of workshop craftsmanship. We invite you to navigate its versatility adeptly and strike a balance between clarity and the font's potential as a graphic art form.
