Exploring a way to publish Pings. *** We started this exploration by asking: “What might a reflection-oriented publishing format look like?” Something that: 1. Appreciates the not-knowing we receive Pings with 2. Inspires reflection 3. Enables learning and connection So far, we’ve found browsing each other’s Pings to feel fluid and quiet. A next step: make more of these and discover what new questions come up. If this format speaks to you, we’re eager to hear how! Of course, if you’d like to try making one, please be in touch… Note: you can scroll these yourself at the link in bio. *** What you’re seeing here builds on @aportraitoftracy , “an experimental short doc in portrait mode” @ohnojoanne wrote and directed. *** Thank you, @saramakesamess for lending your hands (pictured). And thank you Emma who generously filmed me this morning at CoRo.

This lamp feels like a surprise ^ _ ^ I made choices: - as they emerged - using materials I had on-hand - without being certain what form they would take. I stopped a session whenever I felt stuck and I started one whenever a next step became clear. …it also took years [i] to make! It’s that second to last bit - committing to making choices absent of feeling certain about the outcome (read: improvising) - that I feel moved to continue going towards 🌱 - - - i. “Years” if we accept that “within” this lamp are all the other prototypes and explorations that preceded it

when we were amsterdam, i told myself: “peter, try associating a specific memory from this trip with a sound, smell, taste, texture, etc.” i picked the sound of the bike bells and bought a bell. now, that memory lives inside of the ring of that little brass bell. what a neat thing memory is. I feel inspired by understanding more about how my memory works so i can experiment with using it in new ways 😌

I like how this came out ^ _ ^ It’s a place to hang / display our cozy clothes in our bedroom. I sent this to @druckleberryjam : “I liked the time lapse too. Sometimes when I make stuff I feel this tension of: “I want to get in the flow of improvising and making…I also want to document it somehow. And usually, the latter can get in the way of the former. The time lapse was nice because I just sat my phone down and forgot about it.”

this is a eucalyptus cutting board. apparently, the wood comes from the presidio. lots of starts and stops with this project. i started by trying to fill the imperfections with wood glue and saw dust. then i learned wood glue shouldn't be exposed to water. this was inconvenient and I lost enthusiasm for a while. then, i found a chisel at urban ore that ended up providing the momentum i didn't know i needed to "excavate" the wood glue + saw dust and try something else. meanwhile, i got comfortable working with epoxy while finishing a top for a coffee cart thing. then i came back to the cutting board with this new information and it was pretty straightforward from there.

my dad did the cuts, shipped them here and then I did the glue up and finishing. so far, sara’s been using the table for calls (last picture). the project introduced me to pipe clamps, the hand plane and osmo waxes (thank you, @jacecooke ). it also ended up being the reminder i’ve needed to think of projects like these as more “opportunities to learn words/techniques and notice new details” and less “make the perfect thing.”
