Last week at the JMU printshop, visiting artist @grant.m.brownlow welcomed students into his postindustrial Midwestern daydream. Drawing from his experiences growing up in the Rust Belt, Grant’s work explores class, labor, and the half-decayed infrastructures and cultural landscapes that shape the region. He presented an artist talk and shared multiple lithography and silkscreen demos while working on an edition filled with rusted industry and fragmented memories. Thank you to this incredible artist for the time you spent with our creative community!

Call for Participation Print Technology: Hybridization & Humanity A Themed Portfolio Organized by Brett Taylor & Brandie Dziegiel Trade Portfolio Description: Donna Haraway, feminist science scholar and philosopher, describes our relationship with technology as being more than a tool but as systems that influence and inform our social realities, power structures, and values. “Technology is not neutral. We’re inside of what we make, and it’s inside us. We’re living in a world of connections and it matters which ones get made and unmade.” We are not separate from technology, but instead, we are entangled, intertwined, and enmeshed. Building on this idea, printmaking as a technology reveals complex connections between our bodies, histories, and environments through processes like recombination, collage, layering, and hybridization. As a hands-on medium, printmaking allows us to explore how these elements shape identity and our relationship to the world. Participants are invited to create prints using multiple techniques that express themes such as transformation, interconnectedness, autonomy, and reconfiguration. These works aim to uncover new ways of understanding ourselves and our surroundings, using printmaking as a tool for research and discovery that expands embodied knowledge and deepens connection. Edition Specifications: Paper Size: archival paper, 11” x 14”, Horizontal or Vertical Anticipated Edition: 22 How to Apply: To apply, submit your work using the Google Form linked in the PRINTELLIGENCE call or use the link in the bio. You’ll be asked to upload three examples of previous print work that reflect your practice, along with a short artist bio (up to 150 words) and a statement of intent (up to 150 words) describing how your work connects to the theme Print Technology: Hybridization & Humanity. We’re excited to see how your work engages with these ideas and look forward to reviewing your portfolio! Submission Deadline: March 1, 2026 at 11:59pm EST Questions: If you have any questions or need clarification, feel free to reach out to Brandie Dziegiel at [email protected].
