AAndrew Gn T-Shirts
When we collaborate with artists a museum is actively working with, we often proceed carefully. Some creators understandably worry that gift shop items might feel less sophisticated than their core brand. That’s why our conversations with Andrew Gn were such a genuine delight.
Andrew didn’t hesitate, he encouraged us to make T-shirts. They’re a staple of his own wardrobe. And that tells you everything you need to know about him, a world class designer who has dressed some of the most notable people in the world, yet remains accessible, grounded, generous, and guided by immense integrity.
Although Andrew is no longer producing seasonal clothing lines, his creative energy hasn’t slowed for a moment. Working with him, you can immediately see how he approaches everything he does, with the excitement and curiosity of a true creative force. Even on something as familiar as a T-shirt, that enthusiasm was unmistakable, bringing the designs vividly to life.
The phoenix design, centered on the letter A, is adapted from the motif on view in the gallery. Our version features a bold scarlet A. When we discussed the color, I mentioned that The Scarlet Letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne just a few streets from the museum, and how the meaning of the scarlet A evolves in the novel, ultimately coming to stand for Able.
That red letter is still an initial for Andrew but is also a quiet nod to Salem’s literary history, layered into the phoenix symbol of rebirth, resilience, and transformation, it’s a perfect mix. I encourage everyone to come an see the show Andrew GN Fashioning The World on view at PEM until February 16th.
