This 23rd June, World Public Service Day takes on a new importance. Decades of neoliberal policies have driven up inequality and undermined public institutions, creating popular anger and the conditions for the current attacks. But it is a mistake to think the current attacks are merely an extension of the previous decades. Right now we are seeing a shift from neoliberal contempt for the state towards an authoritarian weaponization of it. This is a fundamental difference in scale, purpose and danger that represents a new and existential threat to democracy, public services and unions. A shift we must understand and respond to. The attacks on public services, workers and our unions by authoritarians and billionaires around the world are unprecedented. And there is a reason they are coming after us. Paraguay's nurses have tripled their union's membership from 2,000 to nearly 6,000 in just a few short years. Activists and leaders from the Paraguayan Nurses Association — @Asociaci óParaguaya (APE) — have been honing their skills as part of a PSI/Union to Union project since 2022> They have taken lessons and applied them to build organising strength in the country's hospitals and on its streets. The results were transformative: 📈 Number of nurses in their union: Tripled 🏥 Health institutions with a union: Doubled in number, expanded to police and military hospitals 💰 Pay rises: up to 340% for some members on some sites 🏛️ Secured: new government funding for nurse promotion pathways 📣 Mobilised: 4,000 nurses joined a national demonstration against government plans to replace essential nursing functions in emergency services APE President Mirna Gallardo said: "This process showed that organisation, unity, and sustained union action made it possible to win rights and open up real spaces of influence in public policy."
