Now this is a Giant Red Sea Cucumber 🤯 Giant red sea cucumbers grow to large sizes, up to 2 feet in length and 1 kg in weight, mostly because of their feeding habits, specialized body structure and long, slow-growing life cycle. However, they also retain water, as shown in this video, to move to new locations or as a response to environmental changes. Before moving on to the next step in the harvest, all the sea cucumbers, including this one, will be drained of water to facilitate easier processing. #seacucumbers #divers #shock #sea #bc

From the depths below to the surface above, this view captures a small moment in the journey from ocean to shore. Sea cucumbers play an important role in marine ecosystems, acting as natural recyclers that help keep the ocean floor healthy. Because of their importance, fisheries are carefully managed with strict harvesting limits and seasonal guidelines designed to protect populations and maintain balance in the ecosystem. Every haul is part of a bigger system of responsibility, one that depends on science, regulation, and respect for the waters that sustain coastal communities and marine life alike. Because protecting the ocean today means sustaining it for tomorrow. 🌊 #earthday

The waters of British Columbia, where the Pacific Red Sea Cucumber can be found, are not typically known for their crystal-clear visibility. However, in the fall, when these sea cucumbers are harvested, the water begins to clear up. Winter offers the best visibility for divers in BC. #seacucumbers #divers #bc #seafood

Our divers are on our double duty 👉 diving to harvest sea cucumbers by hand and then processing them on deck to ensure a quality product. #seacucumbers #divers #bc #seafood

The dive may be over, but the work is just getting started. Once sea cucumbers come aboard, the crew slices each one open to release the water inside before filling large buckets with the catch. When full, those buckets can weigh around 500 lbs. They’re then transferred to a larger vessel to be transported to a processor, another step in the journey after the harvest. 🌊🥒
