We are excited to share the official logo for the 80th Annual PSA Meeting, designed by Paula Erazo!! Paula shares that “This logo is inspired by the formline art style of the Pacific Northwest, specifically the Tlingit and Haida peoples. It features Alaskan bull kelp, an important species in local marine ecosystems that is traditionally harvested from June through August for its nutritional value and for making the locally famous kelp pickles. It also includes the mountains of Juneau with stars whose silhouettes resemble humpback whales. These whales visit the coast of Alaska from May through September, and are at peak activity during the time of the conference” This logo design and designs for 2nd and 3rd place will be available at the PSA Algae Store on Red Bubble shortly. Congratulations Paula!

Happy Phyco-Friday! Today we spotlight Claire White, a recent recipient of the PSA Croasdale Fellowship! Claire is a second year Master's student at the University of Texas at Austin's Marine Science Institute. Claire's research focuses on optimizing growth conditions for seaweed aquaculture and utilizing Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture on the Texas Coast. With the support of the Croasdale Fellowship, Claire attended a "Taxonomy of Marine Flora" field course at the Station Biologique in Roscoff, France. During the course, experts from various universities taught the students about the different major groups of macroalgae and common marsh plants through field trips and many hands-on activities! One of the highlights of the course was being “able to meet a lot of like-minded student researchers and share insights about our own research experiences to each other”. Looking ahead Claire is "very excited at the endless possibilities that come with researching seaweed, especially in the aquaculture sector. Using seaweed, whether that be growing it in the open ocean or in the lab can help us solve a lot of major environmental problems” To learn more about the Croasdale Fellowship and other grants available through PSA check out our website! /
