PRRI’s latest polling finds that just 27% of Americans hold favorable views of the term “Christian nationalism,” compared with 47% who hold unfavorable views. In addition, nearly 1 in 4 Americans (23%) have not heard of this term. Partisan divides remain stark, and holding a favorable view of the term “Christian nationalism” is strongly correlated with holding harsh views about immigrants and immigration policy. A new PRRI Spotlight Analysis examines factors shaping Americans’ confidence in ICE, including party and religion, and their views of whether federal funding for the agency has gone too far as ICE plays an increasingly visible role under the Trump administration. While solid majorities of Americans of color, including Black (69%), Hispanic (68%), and AAPI Americans (67%), have little or no confidence in ICE, white Americans are divided (50% have confidence vs. 49% who have little or no confidence). Americans of color are also significantly more likely than white Americans to believe increased ICE funding goes too far: most Hispanic (66%), AAPI (62%), Black (61%), and multiracial Americans (56%), compared with 45% of white Americans. Despite headlines about a possible religious revival among Gen Z, PRRI’s data tells a different story. In 2025, young men (ages 18–29) did not become more religious: the share who identify as religiously unaffiliated has remained largely unchanged since 2013, holding steady at 35% in both 2013 and 2025. The bigger shift is among young women. In 2013, 29% identified as religiously unaffiliated. By 2025, that number has risen to 43%. A recent investigation from the Washington Post found at least 780 incidents at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in which staff used physical force or chemical agents against detainees during the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term. 94% of Democrats, 87% of independents, and 74% of Republicans agree that ICE officers should be held accountable for actions that are unnecessarily violent or violate peoples’ civil rights. Majorities across religious affiliations also agree.

Very few Americans support violence in politics. Just 5% say killing a political opponent can be justified if that person poses a clear danger to the country. But there’s a generational divide: Americans over 50 overwhelmingly reject political violence, while younger Americans — especially those under 30 — are more divided. This data comes from a representative survey of 5,547 adults conducted Nov. 21-Dec. 8, 2025. Read more at PRRI.org
