âToday a reader, tomorrow a leader.â đâ¨
A new chapter begins.
On April 7, 2026, we proudly opened the doors to the new community library at Bulata Elementary Schoolâa space built by the community, for the community.
This learning hub started as a vision from Ms. Rhoda Phillips of the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Inc. (PRRCFI) and Communities for Nature (CfN). Driven by her commitment to education, she mobilized support to transform an old, unused building into something full of life and possibility. Together with the Project ACE team and local community members, we turned that vision into reality.
Today, the space stands as a vibrant libraryâfilled with diverse books, equipped with a projector for interactive learning, and designed with child-friendly spaces that invite curiosity and creativity.
We were honored to celebrate this milestone with partners and friends, including representatives from LMAX Group, the Municipality of Cauayan, PRRCFI trustees, Barangay Bulata leadership, and DepEd and school officials. Their presence reflects whatâs possible when we work toward a shared goal: empowering young minds.
By opening doors to knowledge, we help the children of Bulata dream bigger, explore further, and shape their own futures.

This Labor Day, we honor more than just the sweat and tears shed for conservation and community building. To our Danjugan Island and PRRCFI staff, we honor the legacy you are creatingâthe doors youâve helped open for the next generations to carry our mission forward. You aren't just a part of a team; you are the foundation for the future weâre building together.
Salute to every worker striving to make a difference every day đ
Happy Labor Day!
Every meal represents a journey from the soil and sea to your table. Yet, one-fifth of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally (World Food Programme, 2024). This reality shows that so much of the hard work never gets eatenâevery wasted food is a missed opportunity to nourish a life.
Today, we are joining the "Stop Food Waste" campaign, reminding everyone to respect food and honor the labor of our farmers and fisherfolk. Let us stop viewing ingredients as disposable waste and instead embrace intentionality with every dish we prepare. By planning, preparing, and preserving ahead, we make sure that we are making the most of the resources that sustain us.
Tag a friend and join PRRCFI and Communities for Nature @communities_for_nature in the movement to eat more mindfully. đżđĽ

Through Project ACE, these scholars were given the opportunity to continue their education and grow into who they are today.
With the support of Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation, Inc. (@prrcfi ), Communities for Nature, and LMAX Group, their journeys became something they could hold onto.
Now, as they near graduation, they carry forward not just what theyâve learned, but a sense of purpose and a desire to give back.
With Communities for Nature, you can be part of more stories like theirs. Send us a message to explore partnerships.

True power isn't just generated; itâs shared. âĄď¸đ
This Earth Day, weâre celebrating how renewable energy fuels real changeâfrom lighting homes and classrooms through Project SULO to protecting the biodiversity of Danjugan Island. Whether itâs at the Pahauli Center or in your own backyard, sustainable energy helps us protect what matters most.
When people are supported, real change becomes something we build together. đ¤
đ Your Turn: How are you powering your community today?

A thoughtful reflection from Aidan Alberico (@_aidanbrowning_ ) of LMAX Group on what meaningful sustainability work really looks like.
During her visit to our Project ACE sites with Communities for Nature CEO Rhoda Phillips (@rhoda_phillips ) and the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation, Inc. (@prrcfi ) team, what stood out was not just the intention to supportâbut the willingness to listen, engage, and understand the deeper systems at play.
As she shared, conservation does not happen in isolation. Protecting ecosystems means investing in communities, livelihoods, and the structures that allow long-term impact to take root.
Weâre grateful to be working alongside partners who approach sustainability with this level of depth, care, and commitment.

Conservation starts with people đżđ
In Barangay Bulata, eight Peopleâs Organizations have united as a federation, turning everyday livelihoods into a shared, sustainable future.
From community gardens to tilapia production, this is what collective strength looks like: long-term, local, and led by the community.

Last week was spent on the ground with Aidan from LMAX Group, together with the Communities for Nature and Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation, Inc. (@prrcfi ) teams, across Brgys. Bulata, Elihan, Cartagena and Danjugan.
It was a chance to walk through the work together. To open the doors of the Bulata Library Elementary School and see it filled. To sit down with our ACE Scholars and Federation members, and listen. To visit the Biga-a Dam and the different livelihood initiatives that continue to take shape. We also made courtesy calls to Brgy Elihan and Brgy Cartagena, where the work is beginning to expand.
Partnerships often begin in conversations, but they are understood more deeply in places like these. In shared time, in context, and in the details that do not always make it onto paper.
This is a small look into that week.
More stories from this visit soon!

Today, on International Zero Waste Day, weâre celebrating the power of small, consistent actions, and the communities turning them into lasting change.
In Bulata National High School in Negros Occidental, waste isnât just a problem, itâs an opportunity to lead.
Through Project RootED, supported by the Green Spark Fund and with our partner Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation, Inc. (@prrcfi ), students, teachers, and canteen vendors are working together to transform their school into a zero-waste, climate-resilient campus.
With over 700 students, the challenge is real: single-use plastics, mixed waste, and limited infrastructure. But whatâs more powerful is the response:
đą Student leaders trained as RootED Fellows
đą A reward system that encourages daily waste segregation
đą Vendors shifting to reusable and eco-friendly packaging
đą A Materials Recovery Facility and school-wide waste audits
đą Zero-waste principles embedded into everyday learning
This isnât just about cleaner classrooms, itâs about building a culture of accountability, leadership, and environmental stewardship that extends beyond school walls.
Because zero waste isnât a single action. Itâs a system. A mindset. A community effort. And in Bulata, itâs already taking root.

That concludes our Danjugan Island Nature & Yoga Summer Retreat. âď¸
Thank you to all our Eco Explorers who joined usâyour presence, energy, and openness made this retreat truly special. From sunset and morning yoga sessions, to exploring and learning about marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and bonding over shared meals â each day was a reminder of the beauty of slowing down and reconnecting with nature, with community, and with ourselves.
Until the next retreat!
What began in 2022 as a partnership between Communities for Nature, @prrcfi , and LMAX Group has grown into a multi-year initiative strengthening conservation and community resilience across Southern Negros.
Project ACE (Actions for Communities and Environment) supports environmental protection, youth leadership, sustainable livelihoods, and grassroots development â now reaching over 1,600 households and counting.
As we move through Year 4, we remain committed to building long-term systems where people and nature thrive together.

Unforgettable days underwater with world-renowned marine scientists Dr. Kent Carpenter (fish & conservation đ ), Dr. Gregor Hudson (corals đ޸), and Dr. Klaus Stiefel (gobies & blennies đ) â learning directly on the reef while rediscovering and updating Danjuganâs species list đ
This is Danjuganâs vision in action â where science, stewardship, wildlife, and people exist in harmony, working together toward a sustainable future for reefs and communities alike đđ
Grateful for the knowledge and stories shared, and the reminder that protecting the ocean starts with truly knowing it đ
