I am so excited and proud to say that our short, Safe, is having its world premiere at Slamdance, y’all!
A huge thank you to Director/producer and co-writer Alex Kaplan who was such a phenomenal creative collaborator, and really made the whole experience just that for me, Safe. We were under the banner of his nonprofit @of_substance which is doing some phenomenal work in mental health and addiction advocacy.
Thanks to producer Michael Gabriele for introducing us, collaborating, and gathering us all together in Long Beach! Sarah Whelden for capturing the story so beautifully! Thanks to our crew (Oliver, Mason, and Vee) for sticking the day out, as this was the second short we shot that day!

Woodcut Picture!
Got the chance to make a wood cut (marquetry) veneer panel for my mom (and dad). She wanted a panel that could bring all of the wood colors in her living room together, and a place to put her Eagle friend.
The thin sheets of wood were at my grandpas place for years. Working with it was challenging as it was very old and dry…but also made me feel close to my ancestors, and nostalgic.
I also helped her fix up another old marquetry picture. Which my grandpa had said, “he probably got from some missionary or something.” When asked about its origins. While working on my picture I found the cutouts from the old picture in the box of veneer!
So, someone in my family had made that picture…the ancestor alignment was now ten out of ten. I love burl wood and interesting grains, which aligned with several of my ancestors saves sheets of veneer. The ghosties whisper to us.
My mom wanted to “incorporate the layers of mountains in the distance” as well as tie the room together. I added that, along with a nod to Barr lake (a favorite hangout of hers where she spies eagles with my dad), and the shafts of sun light through the clouds out the window at their place. I also wanted to tie in a lot of the choices from the other marquetry picture, as it was the very same wood.
Time was limited, I cranked this out in 4 days (ahhhhh). I was not sure if I could finish, and had to alter the idea along the way, but finishing it felt great. A reminder to do hard (or similar-impossible) things every day.
