Name the calf competition! 🐮
It's the twentieth anniversary of LEAF's Open Farm Sunday this year! Annabel Shackleton came and did a bit of filming with Rachel for one of their promotional videos.
Some of our calves were very keen to join in on the action and get themselves famous too
Although we do have names for lots of our calves, it happens that this little cutey isn't named - but she really has become very friendly and stands out. Please send us your suggestions and we'll give out the winning name at Open Farm Sunday on 7th June
(Apologies but we will have to ignore any names that double up with other cows - but there are far too many to list them here!)

A lovely little video by Lily of some of the last 12 months - reminding us of some of the great stuff about this job: we're over half way through calving now with baby calves appearing every day. 2026 is the twentieth anniversary of OFS! We'd love for more farmers to join us in showing the rest of the world around our farms so that they can see the good that really happens day-in, day-out.
This will be our 10th OFS - we'd love to see you - this year it's the 7th June 2026 🗓️
Just now we're in our silly season - with 6-11 calves being born daily. Baby calves are incredibly cute but sadly we just don't have time to stop to show people around now. Well actually, we do have time sometimes it's just that we can't plan when it will be!
By June (surely!) the sun 🌞will be shining, the monsoon 💦will be over and these babies will be out grazing in our orchards. #ofs2026
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence 🌱☘️🌱
The girls 🐄🐮 were contented: full & lying down this morning. However Rich felt they would need moving just before lunch & we had to go out for a few hours so decided to move them a couple of hours earlier.
Listen to those foghorns 📢 blaring to the girls at the back of the paddock!
Just imagine how keen they are when they are actually a bit hungry.
We've been so fortunate with this recent spell of weather 🌥️🌦️🌤️. The grass is growing well again & the ground conditions are still good. Great for making lovely rich milk 🥛 #propermilk #freshmilk #milkvending
That might look like dung from here - but it's actually silage.
This prolonged dry weather 🌞☀️🌤☀️around here means that the grass is barely growing. 🌱So we're giving the girls a fresh paddock every day as usual but having to feed them silage. The only good thing is that in this dry weather the tractor isn't making a mess to do it. 🚜
It is making a lot more work every day when usually this is a very quiet time of year; time to get on and fix things or get into other projects. 🛠
This is the view from our bedroom window - I do love being able to watch the cows. 🐄 You can see them here huddled around munching on the silage heaps in the paddock.

Here are our beautiful calves - only born this spring but already looking quite grown up I think! Enjoying their 'cake' as we call it - sugar beet pulp pellets and wheat feed pellets, leftovers from sugar and flour production.
And Rachel with Rain, waiting to do some work. 🐕Rain absolutely loves to help move groups of animals to new paddocks - though catching balls is her very (endlessly) favourite occupation! 🥎⚾️🏐🏏⚽️
We named her Rain because we collected her from friends in Cornwall during a drought and said "We went to Cornwall to bring back a little Rain". Sadly we're back in another unending dry time again here. Not very far west from here has had substantially more rain than us; our valley just seems to miss it in these dry times.
