Similar actions were taken across the nation’s park system this weekend. The upside down flag is a maritime signal of distress. There’s no better symbol for the current state of this country as cynical billionaires attempt to dismantle 108 years of our national heritage.
The mission of the National Parks is to preserve raw wilderness and educate the public, so that future generations can experience the majesty of this Earth in its most pristine, pre-human state. It’s a fragile balance that no amount of money or mineral extraction is worth destroying. But that’s what’s on the table right now. As the Trump administration looks to dismantle our federal system from the inside out and auction off the parts to their fellow oligarchs, it’s important that we are prepared to take a stand to defend OUR public lands.
These public lands are not for any President or drugged-out billionaire to pillage. We will not go quietly into the night.
