There is so much about this condition that many people don’t know, which is why eating disorder awareness starts with learning and understanding.
While there’s a lot to know, a great place to start is understanding the causes of eating disorders.
Swipe and share to help others better understand why eating disorders surface for so many.

Healing is possible, even if it feels like you’re alone in what you’re feeling.
It can often be hard for trans and neurodivergent folks to find affirming treatment. Vaughn Darst (@allgendernutrition ) does a beautiful job sharing their clients’ experiences and reminding us that it’s possible to find support, advocate for yourself, and heal.
If you’re struggling to find eating disorder support, head to theprojectheal.org/referral-directory to find a curated network of treatment providers who have been vetted by Project HEAL for clinical quality, values alignment, and commitment to equitable care. (Vaughn is one of those providers! 💙)

Trans folks struggling with eating disorders and body image dissatisfaction are continually dismissed and misunderstood.
@dannythetransdad does such a beautiful job of sharing their experience with this, and how receiving a Recovery Support Program grant from @withallorg finally helped him access affirming treatment at the @emilyprogram .
We hope Danny’s story inspires you to ask for help—or keep asking, if you already have. If you’re struggling to find gender-affirming, accessible care, we’re here to support you.

Diet culture can be harder to spot within the disabled community.
As today’s blog guest, Erica Mones (@ericamones ), explains, it sometimes disguises itself behind “practical” suggestions meant to improve the person’s life or those of their caretakers. But in reality, this can lead to deeper body anxiety, shame, and disordered behaviors.
Head to theprojectheal.org/blog to read today’s blog post and learn more about how diet culture and disability intersect.

Because eating disorders don’t discriminate—but healthcare often does.
Thank you to @iamchrissyking for saying this and reminding us that Black folks, of all ages and genders, struggle with eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image dissatisfaction.
We can’t forget that, as a result of this false belief, they’re also significantly less likely to receive treatment and support.
We’re working to build awareness at Project HEAL *and* increase access to care. Here are a few ways BIPOC folks can find affirming care through Project HEAL:

Eurocentric beauty standards and cultural expectations around appearance can turn food from a source of healing and connection to a source of anxiety and fear for folks in Indigenous cultures.
We appreciate @indigenouscircleofwellness for taking the time to help us better understand this connection and how providers can better support Indigenous clients who are healing from disordered eating or body image struggles.
The Indigenous Circle of Wellness offers culturally-centered mental health services that honor Indigenous core values, uplifting cultural identity, resilience, and authentic healing.
They are a diverse team of providers, each with unique strengths and modalities, united by a mission to deliver exceptional psychotherapy and holistic wellness that centers cultural diversity and fosters healing.

When we assume “discipline” is always a good thing, and praise it, we reinforce the idea that restriction and control are also good.
Thank you to @AaronFloresRDN for showing how this harmful cultural obsession impacts men and keeps them stuck in disordered eating and body image struggles.
Tune into Aaron’s podcast and Substack, Men Unscripted, to learn more about how men are both struggling with and healing from these challenges through anonymous conversations with men about their experiences with being in their bodies.

We know that @bonitacjackson is not alone in her experience with navigating cultural norms and family expectations alongside having and healing from an eating disorder.
And we so appreciate her sharing so openly and vulnerably with us.
We hope you’ll feel seen in the sharing of her story and compelled to continue seeking support, even if at first it feels like you’re going nowhere fast.

The pressure to control your body doesn't let up in midlife. If anything, it gets louder.
We appreciate how @agingbodyliberation continually shares about how diet culture, ageism, and a wellness industry all converge in a way that can make this season of life even more challenging than it already is for many people.
Disordered eating in midlife is real, it's underrecognized, and it makes sense given the intensity of diet culture, wellness culture, and the anti-aging pressures.
Bottom line: when talking about eating disorders, we can’t leave midlife folks out of the conversation.
