🚨 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐝𝐚 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐝. More than 3,000m² of dune ecosystem were destroyed during an illegal intervention inside a protected area on Sal Island. Dunes that took hundreds of years to form. Essential habitats for unique species. A natural barrier against coastal erosion and the impacts of climate change. Following the alert raised by our team, environmental authorities confirmed that no authorisation had been issued and immediately halted the works. Protected areas exist to preserve Cabo Verde’s natural heritage, not to serve private interests. Protecting the natural reserve of Costa da Fragata means protecting biodiversity, our coastline… and the future of Sal Island. 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 taking place from May 11–14, 2026, in Santa Maria, Sal Island, under the project “Strengthening Climate Resilience and Adaptability in Cabo Verde through Dune Restoration on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista”, funded by the Resilao Fund from @prcmarine The workshop includes presentations by Néstor Marrero Rodríguez, Leví García Romero, and Lorena Naranjo Almeida from Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, bringing together institutions and environmental organizations committed to strengthening coastal ecosystem restoration and climate resilience in Cabo Verde. Participating entities include the Direção Nacional do Ambiente, Delegaçõe do @maa.gov.cv do Sal e Boa Vista, @fundacao_tartaruga , @bioscaboverde , @cvnatura2000 , @fmb_maiobiodiversityfoundation , and Associação Projeto Biodiversidade.

𝐎𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞… 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭. In 2025, more than 400 active nests were monitored across the colonies. Each visit means observing, recording… and often intervening. Because unfortunately, not every chick survives until its first flight. But through continuous monitoring efforts, 305 seabirds were ringed, and new generations continue their journey across the ocean. Each of these lives represents hours of fieldwork, difficult decisions… and constant presence. Because conservation is not just about counting nests. 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐤 𝐒𝐚𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – 𝐅𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 In celebration of Earth Day, we another edition of Trek Sal 2026 program, three days of hiking and camping. Over these 27 km, it was possible to learn about protected areas, natural monuments, and protected landscapes of the beautiful island of Sal, as well as visit seabird colonies and observe them. There were also relaxed moments and a beach clean-up that allowed the collection of 115 bags of plastic, weighing almost 1 ton. 🚨 𝐈𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐝𝐚 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐚 On April 15th, our team identified the destruction of approximately 3,274 m² of dunes inside the Nature Reserve of Costa da Fragata, including land clearing and preparation for construction. After our alert, authorities confirmed there was no authorisation for this activity. The construction work were halted and officially embargoed. ⚖️ Protected areas are not available for development. They are governed by legal frameworks that prevent activities incompatible with conservation, regardless of overlapping plans or interests. 🌍 Dunes are vital systems: they protect the coastline, support unique biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience. Após o nosso alerta, as autoridades confirmaram que não existia qualquer autorização. A intervenção foi suspensa e posteriormente embargada pela Direção Nacional do Ambiente. ⚖️ As áreas protegidas não são terrenos disponíveis para construção. Estão sujeitas a um regime legal que impede intervenções incompatíveis com a conservação da natureza, independentemente de outros planos ou interesses. 🌍 As dunas são sistemas vitais: protegem a costa, mantêm habitats únicos e ajudam a ilha a enfrentar as alterações climáticas. A sua destruição é rápida, a sua recuperação pode levar décadas. 👉 Continuaremos a acompanhar este caso e a defender a Reserva Natural de Costa Fragata enquanto património de todos.
