May is AAPI Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the U.S. It actually started as a week back in 1978 and grew into a full month by 1992. The timing is meaningful too. It marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. in 1843 and honors the role Chinese immigrants played in building the transcontinental railroad, completed in 1869. Over time, the observance has grown to include a broader range of identities, often referred to as AANHPI. It is a chance to learn, celebrate culture, recognize impact, and keep pushing for equity. How are you celebrating AAPI Heritage Month? Let us know in the comments.

Did you know that Georgia's Constitution gives the Governor powerful tools to change how the state uses our public funds? Georgia was the first state in the US to include the line-item veto in its Constitution in 1865, carrying over a practice that began with the Constitution of the Confederacy in 1861. Although Georgia Governors rarely used line-item vetoes to alter appropriations approved by the General Assembly until the 1970s, Brian Kemp has made headlines throughout his tenure for his liberal application of the tool. Swipe right to learn more about line-item vetoes and why it matters for Georgia right now.

Gov. Brian Kemp has called a special session of the Georgia General Assembly for June 17 to address redistricting following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais. Lawmakers will consider changes to Georgia’s congressional and legislative maps ahead of the 2028 election cycle, along with updates tied to election law changes taking effect July 1. Republicans say the redraw is needed to comply with the court’s decision and restore fairness to the process, while Democrats argue the move could weaken Black voter representation in Georgia. The special session comes as Georgia remains a key national battleground state heading into future election cycles. Source: CBS

Georgia Republicans have subpoenaed Stacey Abrams in what she calls a “partisan” and “performative” attack designed to intimidate voting rights advocates and silence organizers fighting for democracy. The Georgia Senate committee investigating the now-shuttered New Georgia Project- the voter mobilization organization Abrams founded before stepping away to run for governor- is demanding testimony from Abrams, Fair Fight CEO Lauren Groh-Wargo, and former New Georgia Project CEO Nsé Ufot. Republican lawmakers are pointing to campaign finance violations tied to the organization in 2018 and 2019, despite Abrams repeatedly stating she was no longer leading or directing the group during that period. Abrams says state records and testimony from the Georgia Ethics Commission itself found no evidence she coordinated with the organization while running for governor. “They know I have done nothing wrong,” Abrams said. “This is not a search for truth. It is a desperate distraction from the ongoing erosion of democracy at the hands of partisan state leaders.” Abrams also connected the subpoena to broader efforts to suppress minority voting power, saying she was targeted just days after speaking out against voter suppression efforts across Southern states. “This is a test case,” Abrams said. “A calculated effort to intimidate and disarm voting rights advocates at a time when the right to vote is deeply imperiled.” The same Senate committee has also tried to tie Abrams to a separate $2 billion EPA clean energy grant because she previously served as senior counsel to one of the organizations involved, but PolitiFact found no evidence that Abrams personally received any of the grant money. Despite calling the hearing political theater, Abrams says she will testify on a “mutually agreeable date” and continue fighting for voting rights and democratic participation in Georgia.
