What is the version of home you remember when life carries you elsewhere? And what happens when the home is unmistakably South Asian? STIR speaks to Lahore-born, London-based artist Irum Rahat discussing her solo show at the Pristine Contemporary in Delhi titled Ye Kab ki Baat Hai?
Languid everyday scenes in which rooms recur, morph and reappear are drawn from Rahat’s memory of her Lahore home and what she left behind when she moved abroad for her master’s.
“During my MA, once a white woman asked me: “Why are you painting a woman and a cat in a brown house? Who cares?” And I said: “I care, because it’s my story to tell.” There’s so much to say about European painting, what’s considered important and what can be shown in oil, but that’s exactly it. You don’t get to decide anymore what’s important. I get to decide it, because the brush is in my hand,” the artist tells STIR.

She brings together works by Seven South Asian women artists: Afina Ashraff (@afinashraff ) , Alishba Binte Faysal (@alishbabintefaysal ), Krisha Bhuva (@krishabhuva_7 ), Jahnvi Rohet (@jahnvieatsgod ), Mays Al Moosawi (@maysalmoosawi ), Mahnoor Salman Khan (@mahnoorsalmank ) and Pem Lham (@pempoko_art ).
Spanning geographies from India - Kerala, Gujarat, Rajasthan- to Bhutan, and Oman and to the wider diaspora, ‘She’ unfolds as a quiet yet resolute meditation on the contemporary feminine condition- at once intimate and expansive. Across painting, mixed media, and material exploration, the works navigate layered terrains of identity shaped by culture, inheritance, and modernity. There are gestures of sisterhood and kinship; reflections on domestic and personal ritual; and moments where pleasure, memory, and longing converge. The exhibition equally holds space for disquiet - confronting the complexities of the female body, the weight of expectation, and the subtle violences that persist within social frameworks.
Work by Alishba Binte Faysal.
