Day One panels of the 2026 Black Queer & Trans Studies Graduate Conference take place on Friday, May 1, at McCosh Hall. What does it mean to do Black queer/trans studies now? Amidst intensifying state violence both within and beyond the academy, Day One panels invite inter- and cross-disciplinary engagement with Black queer/trans life and politics through a global lens. Graduate and early-career scholars will explore the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and power in conversation with one another. This event is open to all — registration is required. On April 21 at 4:30 p.m. at 134 Small auditorium of the Princeton University Art Museum, the Fugitivities and Confluences working group will host a screening of the internationally acclaimed film Sugar Island @sugarislandfilm , followed by a conversation with its award- winning director, Johanné Gomez Terrero @johannegomezterrero . Sugar Island is among the most important films produced in the Caribbean over the last decade, winning numerous awards worldwide since its 2024 release. The film follows 14- year- old Makenya, who lives in a batey (sugarcane community) as she navigates a teenage pregnancy and her community’s struggles for labor rights. The film offers a powerful meditation on labor, Black life, spirituality, and the afterlives of slavery and colonialism in the Caribbean, resonating deeply with ongoing scholarly conversations in Women’ s, Black, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies.    The post- screening discussion will offer a unique opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and the broader community to engage directly with Gomez Terrero’s creative process, interdisciplinary approach, and the film’s significant contributions. Additionally, it will serve as a forum to foster dialogue on Black diasporic histories, aesthetics, and resistance across time, while spotlighting one of the most accomplished and creative Caribbean and Afro-diasporic voices in the visual arts.  Supported by @princeton.eff @princetongsrc @cafcenter_princeton @spo.princeton @princetonhumanities

🗂️Another Peek Inside Princeton’s Closet🗃️ As part of our Pride Month, a group of staff & faculty explored the @pulibrary archives at Mudd Library to learn more about LGBTQIA+ history at Princeton🌈 — did you know that LGBTQIA+ pride weeks and celebrations date back to as early as 1972? That means our celebrations this month mark at least 54 years of LGBTQIA+ pride programming at Princeton! Be sure to stop by PrideFest this Friday for your own “A Lesbian Was Here” sticker🟠
