International Day of the Girl is a day declared by the United Nations to give a platform to raise the voice and highlight the unique needs of girls. For the last few years Pretty Purposed has worked alongside girls in Petersburg, Dinwiddie, Sussex, and the surrounding areas through school and community based programs, mentoring, enrichment, and arts and cultural experiences.
We are here to be a part of the village that provides long term nurturing and support to girls and young women. As we move into curriculum development, coalition building, and scaling our work, we thank you! Let’s take a look at some memories throughout the past five years!

Pretty Purposed is excited to introduce our Alumni Leadhers. Our Alumni Leadhers engage in representing Pretty Purposed as ambassadors that support community engagement and outreach, youth led advocacy, development, and other special projects. Each Leadher is an alumni of Pretty Purposed programs and will be working alongside us as we carry out girl centered work within the Tri-Cities and surrounding counties. They are spending their summer training and developing leadership skills with Pretty Purposed staff. Follow our work as we grow together.

It was a powerful, soulful, and stunning celebration of Black artistry and storytelling. 👠🌈 After the show, the girls and chaperones fueled up together at @vcu_dining for some good food and good reflective conversation 🍽️🙌🏾

🎉💜 April was Volunteer Appreciation Month and we took the opportunity to celebrate our amazing volunteers. On April 15th, we hosted a Volunteer Appreciation and Open House event at our brand new Pretty Purposed space, welcoming current, former, and prospective volunteers for an evening of charcuterie, dessert, great conversation, and so much gratitude! 🧀🍰✨ Our incredible volunteers were presented with certificates of appreciation, because the work they pour into our girls and our mission deserves to be recognized and celebrated. 🏅 Because of YOU, Pretty Purposed is able to show up for girls and young women across our region every single day and we do not take that for granted! 💪🏾🌟

This session is about to be EVERYTHING! ⚡💜 Three phenomenal young women from @r.e.a.l_girlz will be co-presenting at the 2026 Girls Mental Health Summit and they are absolutely showing out for their generation! 👏🏾🌟
Jocelyn Sanderson, a sophomore at Hermitage High School and aspiring labor and delivery nurse; Mila Henry, founder of MH Boxes and Youth Ambassador for the Southern Black Girls and Women's Consortium; and Cali Rivers, a freshman at Appomattox Regional Governors School, aspiring psychologist and social worker. These young ladies are leaders within their community showing up to speak directly to their peers. 👑 Together they will lead "Check Your Energy", an interactive workshop where girls will explore where their mental, emotional, and social energy is being spent through a creative "energy receipt" activity. 🧾✨ Participants will reflect on what drains them, what fills them up, and walk away with practical tools to set boundaries and protect their peace because our girls deserve to invest their energy into what truly matters.

We are bursting with pride to celebrate Trikia Clayborne, Shonte Mason, and Shima Smith, three incredible members of the Pretty Purposed family named Petersburg City Public Schools Teachers of the Year! 🏆👏🏾 Trikia is a music teacher and former Girl Circle facilitator at Lakemont Elementary; Shonte is a third grade teacher and current facilitator at Walnut Hill Elementary; and Shima is a former Pretty Purposed parent turned mentor, facilitator, and reading specialist at Cool Springs Elementary who was named Teacher of the Year for the entire school division!
