I was blessed to have had the opportunity to discover surfing over 30 years ago spending my summers on Richmond St, and making the walk or bike ride one street over to this spot, where my car often takes me to this day regardless of better conditions somewhere else on the island. 48 months ago I needed a thing to look forward to for my own health. So decided I would surf every month. Having a thing to look forward to, fishing, walk with a friend, go visit a place. It’s good for you. It’s given me great joy to be in the ocean these last 48 months. Some days were thrilling some were not wave wise but spiritually all the same…there is no better place to experience peace and quiet and presence of something much bigger than yourself. Only a surfer knows the feeling is silly, but it also has so much truth. Today was only about 30 min long, but I smiled and was happy as I could be in the water and as I left. A few times over this journey were in California, 2 in Puerto Rico, and most up and down the NC coast. But there is no more special place than Concord Street for me. I’ve shared some great times there with my kids friends, and just myself. Get out and do something, get away from the mess if even just for a minute. Fly fishing, ride a bike, walk in the woods, don’t do mine…Just get away from the noise. There is so much. Gas and a surfboard or fishing rod is much cheaper than therapy or prescription medication. Not that they don’t have a place for some, but you may be surprised what you can do with sunshine. Also blessed to have a friend who I’ve know because of surfing for 30 years who made 3 of the boards most of these waves were ridden on. I have logged some miles for sure on my 3 favorite boards my @jmsurfboards some on my catch anything @davidvernorsurf 5’11 and on those days you just need to cruise a, 10ft @savagesurfboards . 2.5 years of cafeteria duty watching middle schoolers eat breakfast always has some interesting moments. A few weeks ago a sweet little girl decided to give me her French toast sticks she did not want. Couldn’t turn those down. She then wanted to tell me about her favorite cartoon character. I’m a bit out of touch and had no clue. Now we daily catch up on cartoon chat and how they are connected to things from my childhood. I’m the old age that all my childhood has now inspired new stuff. Thankfully she actually knew who #ragadyann was that inspired her favorite character in her show. Decided to return her French toast stick kindness. Kids of 2026 are interesting creatures, sometimes kind gestures get met with being called a creeper that once would get smiles and thank you’s. Not every time, kids aren’t bad, it’s just an interesting time, a different time. Maybe because I’m the strange ole assistant principal and not the cool young art teacher I once was. Many days working as a school administrator are not what I could classify as fun. There are however many moments when kids bring joy, kindness and laughter that remind you everything is not has bad as you think. The power the not fun moments have over you can easily make you forget all the fun. I made her a little thank you drawing. You’d thought I’d given her a million dollars. Lucky for me I can get called a creeper or weirdo for sharing art another day and remember the joy this kid had from a drawing. She’s a young artist now but assured me when she was an assailant principal or teacher one day she’d do the same or I told her one day when I’m long gone she could sell it on eBay for 5’s of 10’s of dollars. My dream job, if I could make a living just giving little drawings away for free to random people. That would be cool, whether or not I got French toast sticks first.
Didn’t want to see it really happen, but good bye to the @sorrowdrowner . Though I look forward to the creative masterpiece they create in CA.
