I don’t post much these days. But when I do it’s always for something meaningful.
At 7am tomorrow I will once again don 25kg of firefighting gear and breathing apparatus and race my way up 1103 steps to the top of the Skytower, all in the name of raising funds for Blood Cancer and Lukemia research.
This is my second year and to be frank, I’m not as prepared as I want to be. The lateness of this post attests to that. My lack of training in recent weeks also contributes. Work and life have got in the way.
But here I am. Ready for the challenge. Knowing the size of the task ahead is daunting but I will not be found wanting.
My hill to climb tomorrow is tiny in comparison to those families who have to deal with the ordeal that is cancer. We do this challenge to share in their battle. To show we have empathy. To show support to a fellow human in hardship any way we know how.
Wish me luck for my brief mental and physical ordeal tomorrow. But please, if you have the chance, donate to this cause. Every dollar, every step helps.
I will see you at the top.

Well that was insane!
I’m super humbled by the generosity of my friends and the comradery of Firefighters. I raised $2000 for Blood Cancer and Leukemia personally. That’s part of the $23,600 Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade brought up here. Collectively, the vent has raised nearly $1.3mil. 328 meters climbed in 16:49 with BA donned and started. Pretty happy with my time but will definitely be back next year to shave some off. Thank you again for your support. It’s a pretty special thing to be a part of. And a special thanks to my Lyttelton skytower crew, who with endless little pieces of advice, helped me knock the bastard off.
So I’m not usually a soap box social media kinda guy… but I’m doing the Skytower firefighter Stair Climb tomorrow morning to raise money for blood cancer and Leukemia research. It’ll be a hard slog in fire fighter kit and breathing apparatus but it’s a good cause. My 20mins of suffering is nothing of those who have to live with and along side these diseases. Please take a sec and donate if you can. Wish me luck. .nz/gregknight
