Aufgewachsen zwischen Popkultur der 90er und frühen 2000er – von Bravo bis MTV und Castingshows – träumen Jesseline und ihr Bruder Johnny von einer eigenen Band. Today is Mother’s Day. I have two kids, and yet I am still carrying the weight of what was done to me in a professional context. It happened during a production, and there were no consequences. I realized then what happens when a white woman in power has a personal problem that is completely unrelated to the work or to me, and she uses me as a vent for her own issues. (Full story below) For a long time I stayed quiet about my experience during the touring production of “Choke Hole”. Not because it was minor, but because it was never properly addressed. From the start, I experienced a pattern of hostile behaviour from production assistant Dana Tucker. Small but constant moments of exclusion and controlling behaviour made me feel unwelcome, leaving me confused throughout the process. The situation escalated during the tour. After a show, I took a taxi with colleagues to the hotel. When we arrived, it became clear that I was the only person in the entire production placed in that hotel. My colleagues assumed it was a mistake, because it didn’t match where everyone else was staying. In reality, I had been completely separated. Out of a group of at least 10 people, I was the only one placed in this rundown and unsafe accommodation. I was in shock. I ended up packing my things, a colleague let me stay in her room because I did not feel safe there alone. As the only Black woman in the production, this isolation felt even deeper. Later I learned this was not a logistical error, but a result of personal behavior. When the institution reached out, it was only to inform me that there would be no consequences. There was no compensation, no conversation, and no accountability. To this day, she continues to work in the same field and on this very same production. I still cannot fully understand how something like this was possible in a professional context.
