Gybe #1 = Upwind Gybe-line
This is when you really ‘carve’ the board up ‘into wind’ FIRST using a very low set up.
Opposition = Rig Back + Body Forward in ‘Warrior’
Why:
Helps reduces excessive speed, fear and makes sheeting the rig IN easier.
Gives you increased clew control & higher gybe success ratio in the rough stuff.
When:
In over powered OMG situations.
When bearing away is just too scary and bouncy.
You want maximum control to help sheet in & JUST GET ROUND!
How:
1/ Keep super low, pull down on the boom.
2/ Sheet in and down hard on the clew hand - A LOT!
3/ Be more ‘Warrior’ = LOOK into and through the turn over a super flex the rear knee and ankle.
4/ Keeping pull in & down on the boom, especially the CLEW hand.
5/ Carve hard early and keep very low on foot change (dead downwind).
With practice, yes, you can plane out of an ‘upwind gybe line’.
Gybe #2 = Downwind Gybe-line
Fast very broad downwind approach & set up.
For when you feel confident, the water is flatter and speed is your ultimate goal.
Opposition:
Entry: Rig forward / body low and back ‘Sunken 7’
Carving:
- IF the rig is fully sheeted in & back… Then body can lean forward in Warrior.
- IF the rig is unintentionally sheeted out - keep low back and pull down on the boom.
Why:
Blasting fast downwind before even thinking of gybing cuts out a lot of the turn.
Increases speed and helps to make the sail go light.
But you MUST bear away ‘a lot’ using a low Sunken 7 set up!
Avoid….
1/ Avoid ‘U’ shaped gybes! Either head upwind first or fast downwind. Never think reach to reach!
2/ Standing up when unhooking and taking rear foot out.
3/ Gear gazing + Standing up on exit
So make that vital decision before gybing...
Fast downwind set up - If in control + looking for max speed.
Or
Upwind set up - If feeling over powered + need a survival get me round gybe.
