Steve was an inspiring musician, record engineer and teacher. A beacon in a misty world that is the music industry. I had the absolute privilege of working with him twice and got to know him a little bit as a person.
I can’t say I knew him well, but well enough to experience that, next to all of the above, he was also a very wise, modest, warm, clever and funny guy. An - sorry for the term - anti-hero with as little ego as possible. In stark contrast with what you might expect from a man so legendary.
Steve has touched so many souls around the world in a direct or an indirect way and I know he will continue to do so. From the music he made through the music he recorded so badass perfectly, to the countless interviews. I’m sure he’d be embarrassed by so much praise.
Even though he was partly known for being outspoken about his point of view on every aspect of making and recording music and everything around it, I recall this one moment where he was also diplomatic in his own way.
We were recording a song that had this intentionally annoying vocal sample that kept running through the entire song. The band was divided into two camps: one camp wanted the sample to be louder, the other camp wanted it to be more quiet.
Steve - who always tried to stay out of artistic decisions - had the perfect both funny and diplomatic answer. He said: “It sounds like that drunk uncle on Christmas Eve that everyone hates, but it just wouldn’t be the same without”. The words we needed in that moment. We met in the middle.
There’s one more anecdote I’d like to share.
We were taking a break from recording and we sat in the control room, with Steve at his mixing desk with his back towards us. We were talking with the band and other people from the studio about what our last words would be before we die. There was a lot of laughter with everyone saying stupid stuff, when Steve - who had been quiet the entire time - turned around in his chair and said in a voice that mimicked someone dying: “My last words will be: “Delete my browsing history…””
I hope someone got around to doing that for him.

A year ago today, Steve Albini passed away. His artistic and philosophical viewpoint had an immeasurable influence on a lot of people, myself included.
I first met Steve at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago in 2014 when we were recording the second Raketkanon album.
Because I was singing through a series of guitar effect pedals, there was a technical issue that I couldn’t solve. Without getting too technical; because a microphone has a balanced output and guitar pedals have an unbalanced output, they’re not really meant to be combined. There was a lot of noise on my signal and I had no idea how to fix it.
On day one of our recording session, Steve got a visit from some people of this audio effects brand. They had just given him some of their new gear when he called me over to the control room where he was talking to the people from the brand. “Pieter-Paul! This is exactly what YOU need!”, he said, and gave me an effects looper that was just minutes before given to him.
Steve was a very nice and down to earth guy and didn’t at all act according to what you might call his “status”. But it was the first day I met the man that had made and recorded so much of the music that had formed the roots of my own musical identity. I didn’t really know how to react, also with the people from the brand in the same room. A bit overwhelmed, I thanked Steve and hooked up the pedal and it indeed was exactly what I needed and my problem was gone, just like that. Steve didn’t just let me use the pedal, he actually gave it to me. I used it on the entire album.
Two years later in 2016 I went back to Electrical Audio, this time to record Kapitan Korsakov’s third album. I also used that same pedal for my vocals in Kapitan Korsakov but recently I had somehow broken it. I was kind of ashamed to admit it, but when I did, Steve took his own pedal (meanwhile he’d gotten the same one he’d gifted me two years before) and gave it to me. “I’ll get yours fixed. You can have mine!”
