Shing02 is a pioneering MC and lyricist whose influence has spanned decades. As one of the early multilingual rappers in Japan, he helped shape underground hip-hop culture and push its boundaries across generations and borders.
He began exploring music during his time as a graduate student at UC Berkeley. Immersed in the Bay Area’s creative scene, his exchanges with like-minded musicians and DJs eventually led to the release of his first cassette mixtape in 1995.
In the early 2000s, he met Nujabes, sparking a long-lasting partnership that culminated in the iconic six-part Luv(sic) series. Their jazz-rap sound laid the foundation for lo-fi hip-hop, becoming the backdrop to study sessions and late-night listening around the world.
