Last December I was diagnosed with breast cancer. No family history, no symptoms, I was lying in bed one night when I felt a tiny lump. So small I couldn’t find it when I sat up. But the next night it was there again, and only because a friend had recently had a scare did I book a GP appointment.
Luckily, I’d caught it early enough that it hadn’t spread. But it was still 6 months of treatment - surgery, chemo (my hair!), IVF (freezing embryos because chemo affects fertility for years) and radiotherapy. And now 5-10 years of daily drugs and monthly injections (with a long list of side effects 😵💫) to prevent it coming back - a fear I’m learning to live with.
I often look back and panic about what would’ve happened if I hadn’t felt the lump. It’s surreal looking at photos from last summer, completely unaware what was coming. So I’m breaking my Instagram retirement to share this strange year (blonde wig?), and to hopefully #influence someone to feel their boobs and go to the doctor if anything feels fishy. 1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, increasingly younger people, so please check check check (.)(.)
