I’ve been working on this for quite some time now. I was present in October when the new bridge in Haverfordwest was officially opened by Eluned Morgan. She referred in her speech to an ancient Welsh aphorism which translates as “ If you want to be a Leader, be a Bridge “. In the context of our times then and now this is a bit of Wisdom which needs to be spread about. I wanted to make some art to celebrate and note the installation of the snazzy new bridge , so the idea of incorporating this aphorism into a digital photo montage of the bridge and Castle became my planned piece of work. Since then I have hand drawn the letters onto a picture montage and then hand cut four acetates for four colours to be screen printed and we mocked up a 5th to apply metallic green to the text today. Spent the day realising what a poor job I’d made of the colour separations as I was trying to get the successive layers to sit properly in register. I’m very grateful to Popty Press and in particular Studio Assistant Meg who made sure I didn’t try to print anything upside down and reversed. Close call though, thanks Meg.

We’ll be using the etching press and printing with beautiful inks on cotton papers. Especially suitable for those who have done some etching before, but beginners are welcome. Da iawn Printwyr Hwlffordd! | Well done Haverfordwest Printmakers!
Our contractors are hard at work restoring and developing Temperance Hall as a future home for heritage printmaking. In the meantime, we have been supporting printmakers to showcase their creative expertise, to celebrate the town and help to publicise the project.
Thank you to everyone who took part in and visited our recent call-out and group exhibition: ‘Haverford Pressed in Black and White; an appreciation of the built and natural heritage of our town and surrounding area’.
It was a huge success in a tiny space with a two-day exhibition welcoming the creative community and their family and supporters. We were impressed to learn that the exhibition featured the wonderful work of 48 local artists and printmakers!
A 10% commission of all sales will go towards the fit-out of the community printmaking space in Temperance Hall, we are excited to imagine the local creativity that can happen in the venue when works are completed.
Thanks go to @poptypress for hosting and collaborating on the event, and to all the wonderful creatives of the Haverfordwest Printmakers who took part.
We are test running our ZAP Zine Club starting Saturday 11 April 26 for four Saturdays in a row : 10am to 12pm on 11, 18, 25 April and 2 May. If you fancy a couple of hours of creative expression and exploration then please come along! Pay card or cash on the day, £10 per session (£5 for 16–25s).
Who is zine club for? Here’s your opportunity to join like-minded people who have something to say or show. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never made a zine before or are a seasoned zine maker. Suitable for young people 16+ and adults.
What is a zine? A zine is a self published, small circulation, DIY booklet. It can be in any size and format, and any number of pages. Zines are rooted in self expression and foster community while offering a way to inform and entertain the reader. You don’t have to know how to draw or write. You just need a desire to express yourself and connect with other people through your zine.
What are zines about? The content of a zine is often unconventional, personal, or particular to a person’s interests and passions and can be poetry, art, stories, cartoons or anything else you can think of. Zines are a creative outlet with no pressure to be neat, tidy or right. They are very accessible and can be messy, rough, photo-copied and black and white or they can be more polished looking. Unlike magazines, their value is not commercial or for profit and they are more likely to be swapped with other zine makers, given away or sold for a nominal amount of money.
More info on our courses page - link in bio. We love zines and we’d love to make some with you!
