"Before Alex Haley passed in 1992, he left us one more gift: 15 interviews with the Black filmmakers who were rewriting the rules. Spike Lee. Julie Dash. John Singleton. Gordon Parks. Robert Townsend. and others. For 34 years, these conversations have been scattered, incomplete, almost forgotten. This February 10–25, we're bringing them back—all 15 episodes, one per night. A love letter from our elders. A blueprint for our future. #DialogueWithBlackFilmmakers #AlexHaley #BlackHistoryMonth #FaxOverFixedShun #HIDstoryLessons from a #HIDstorian #ShareIfYouCare #BlackHIDstoryMonth #SFBayView #POPEnEnt #JusticeForAlexHaley #RestInPower
Why February 10–25, 2026:
February 10, 2026 marks the 34th anniversary of Haley's passing. By airing one episode per night from February 10 through February 25, we create a Black History Month memorial event that honors Haley, the guests who shared their vision with him, and the ancestors whose struggles made that vision possible.
Why it matters now:
The issues these filmmakers discussed in 1992—studio gatekeeping, stereotypical representation, the economic barriers to Black storytelling—remain front and center in 2026. Hearing Spike Lee, Robert Townsend, and Julie Dash articulate these challenges in their own words, at the very moment they were breaking through, offers both historical grounding and contemporary inspiration for a new generation of creators.

I still drink out of my cup every morning to remind me of the obstacles that I overcome in the midst of learning what the fick was going on. In our day you earned them by mistakes made in our evolution. Words without actions have no meaning!
I am and have been building our own Village to get away from allowing these people to keep coming up off of OUR business. I am bringing a table to the table and the only way we're going to make it is together, by ourselves wasn't cost effective! POPEfully you never had one of these, and if you had one, you grew from there... I got a break in between semesters and I'm making time... Our Village is under construction and if you know me in REAL life, you know that I've been a little busy learning how to translate what I've learned into something that you can OVERstand and from there make plans. #ShareIfYouCare #FaxOverFixedShun
