[YEAR FOUR - CAPSTONE RESEARCH + PROJECT BEST OF SHOW]: The Choreography Space by LAU Sin Ting, Nancy | Tutor: Gilles VENDERSTOCKEN ————————————————— My capstone research explores the concept of Chinese hell, examining its representation of human punishment. Inspired by Jiang’s 2008 painting, I sought to reinterpret its essence through performance, selecting five key pieces for this exploration. In my analysis, I studied the structure of the paintings, focusing on the geometries created by the figures. This led to the development of choreography that reflects the dynamic movements depicted in the artwork. Each step possesses distinct textures—walking, rotating, waving, and more—culminating in unique flows that convey individual narratives. This inquiry prompts a deeper consideration of how space interacts with movement. For me, space is flexible and intangible, which I explore through my body as a medium for expression. This research represents a synthesis of visual art and dance, revealing the profound connections between them. ————————————————— #polyudesign #schoolofdesign #digitalinteriors #exploration #digitalandinteractive #tests #environmentandinteriordesign #interiordesign #spatialsystems #spatialmanipulation #archistudents #polyuEID #environmentalstudents #interiorstudents #spatialdesign

[YEAR FOUR - CAPSTONE RESEARCH + PROJECT BEST OF SHOW]: The Thresholds by MIAO Jiayi, Ann | Tutor: Gilles VENDERSTOCKEN ————————————————— What makes a space “bad”? This site-narrative project investigates Hong Kong’s pressing urban and social challenges by designing 3 extreme, discomforting scenarios that amplify current issues. Inspired by research on “Scenes of Hells” (因果圖鑒), the project reinterprets the narratives and spatial qualities as a contemporary version of urban future. Chapter 1: Sha Tin - Extreme Climate Change Chapter 2: Mong Kok – Hyper-density Chapter 3: Central – Disparity of Wealth and Power Aiming to raise awareness and provoke reflection on our current living environment. The study is communicated via a short film, visualising the 3 scenarios across district, street, and interior scales to communicate their spatial and experiential consequences. It blends static photography of existing sites with animation to intensify latent extremes. ————————————————— #polyudesign #schoolofdesign #digitalinteriors #exploration #digitalandinteractive #tests #environmentandinteriordesign #interiordesign #spatialsystems #spatialmanipulation #archistudents #polyuEID #environmentalstudents #interiorstudents #spatialdesign

[YEAR FOUR -CAPSTONE RESEARCH + PROJECT BEST OF SHOW]: [SI]_Oriental Dollhouse: Dovetail Joinery Self-locking Toy Bricks Designed from a Feminist Perspective by SO Mei Wan Lily | Tutor: Sky LO ———————————— Originating from group research - What socio-cultural narratives do miniature spatial design unveil across centuries? How might feminist epistemology reinterpret the domestic space? We conducted a critical study of Dollhouses from the 17th to the 21st centuries. Contextualizing their evolution within feminist historiography and spatial theory, we analyzed three core elements: spatial semiotics, spatial gendered distribution, and play mechanics. These lenses then informed the conceptualization of a neo-Chinese dollhouse possibility. Beginning with the seed of modular units, grounded in self-locking mortise-and-tenon structures, guided by Eastern aesthetic philosophy, and driven by feminist discourse, this project redefines the spatial language of Chinese toy bricks and a dollhouse of one’s own. ———————————— #polyudesign #schoolofdesign #digitalinteriors #exploration #digitalandinteractive #tests #environmentandinteriordesign #interiordesign#spatialsystems #spatialmanipulation #archistudents #polyuEID #environmentalstudents #interiorstudents #spatialdesign

[YEAR FOUR -CAPSTONE RESEARCH + PROJECT]: [SI]_Spatial Intelligence Research: What does miniature spatial design reveal throughout the decades? How can it be interpreted from a feminist perspective? by KWAN Yee Ting Tiffany, TONG Po Yee Bobo, SO Mei Wan Lily | Tutor: Gerhard BRUYNS, Peter HASDELL, Jennifer LEE ———————————— With an understanding of Spatial Intelligence—the capacity to recognize and comprehend spatial relationships, envision and manipulate objects within space, and navigate various environments—this study explores Spatial Intelligence from a sociological perspective and examines the spatial qualities manifested in design through a feminist lens. It utilizes the theoretical foundations of feminism and spatial dominance to analyze changes in dollhouse spaces from the 17th to the 21st century. The primary resources for this investigation include plans, sections, and mechanism drawings of dollhouses. Through an examination of spatial dominance and power dynamics within miniature domestic environments, we find that the distribution and arrangement of space are influenced by concepts of dominance and values, infusing the dollhouse with rich spatial semiotics. Furthermore, as societal contexts evolve, transformations in dollhouse mechanisms deconstruct traditional structures of domestic labor spaces, revealing the interplay between design, function, and gender roles over time. This research aims to enhance our understanding of how spatial design can reflect and challenge societal norms regarding gender and power dynamics. ————————————————— #polyudesign #schoolofdesign #digitalinteriors #exploration #digitalandinteractive #tests #environmentandinteriordesign #interiordesign #spatialsystems #spatialmanipulation #archistudents #polyuEID #environmentalstudents #interiorstudents #spatialdesign

[YEAR FOUR - CAPSTONE RESEARCH + PROJECT BEST OF SHOW:[IS]_Chromatic Impact] by WONG Chun Jun, Juno; | Tutor: Gerhard Bruyns ————————————————— Shaping Environmental And Spatial Colour Coding Colour often gets undervalued. Everyone holds limiting notions about how colour should be used, but I think that colour can accomplish more, which is why I decided to do a colour project in Tai O. This site-specific project focuses on the use of colour to structure an improve to the urban environment. I will apply the method of color decoding to examine the surrounding objects and environment in order to determine the importance and influence of different community functions. Following this analysis, I will employ innovative colour coding techniques to reconfigure the experience, movement, circulation and structure meaning within Tai O. It is more about how the to use colour to associate the certain functional aspects. To provide a certain degree of readability, I naturally combine colour and other structures based on the research in addition to painting colours. The final intention is to use colour to develop a new language for Tai O. ————————————————— #polyudesign #schoolofdesign #digitalinteriors #exploration #digitalandinteractive #tests #environmentandinteriordesign #interiordesign #spatialsystems #spatialmanipulation #archistudents #polyuEID #environmentalstudents #interiorstudents #spatialdesign
